2015년 백지처럼 보이는 회화가 2천만 달러에 낙찰되었습니다. 하얀 벽처럼 보이는 캔버스일지라도 입찰가가 수백만 달러 이상 올라가는 것은 예술계에서 종종 일어나는 일입니다. 단색조 회화는 본질적인 가치를 가지고 있다고 평가되지만 순수성과 참신함만으로 이러한 작품들의 가격을 설명하기에는 의문이 듭니다. 단색조 회화운동에 대해 이야기를 나눠보세요.

In 2015, Bridge, an all-white painting by Robert Ryman that looks like a blank canvas, received a $15 million bid at Christie’s (a British auction house known for the sale of art). The jaw-dropping bids on this and many other pieces created by simple, monochromous brushstrokes have spawned rich discussion among art critics and laypeople. In painting his White Canvas Series, Robert Rauschenberg intended to purely reflect the lights and shadows of the surroundings. But there is an irresistible question that confuses observers: “Do these simple paintings have any intrinsic [1] value?” In fact, you don’t need a degree or formal training to paint a canvas in one color. And there is a fair amount of criticism directed towards seemingly pretentious [2] collectors who do not flinch at the astronomical price tags of all-white or all-blue paintings.  Those who see true value in single-color paintings see innovation and purity in them. Painting a canvas in a single color is understood to be a pure act that cuts down on unnecessary elements and focuses on the physical existence of the work. At the same time, even a single color can manifest in a multi-faceted form through manipulating differences in texture and shades to expand the range of expressions. But most importantly, while you could paint an all-white painting, you didn’t. Artists who did create monochromatic paintings did it and did it before others.  Admittedly, novelty and symbolic purity are not enough to explain the craze over certain simple paintings. Some pieces sell in the millions because the art market is a winner-takes-all arena driven by consensus. Demand for art is not evenly distributed as smaller galleries are shutting down while wealthy clients congregate to shop for artworks at bigger, more prestigious galleries. According to <a href="https://d2u3kfwd92fzu7.cloudfront.net/Art%20Basel%20and%20UBS_The%20Art%20Market_2018.pdf" style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:underline;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;text-decoration-skip-ink:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">the Art Basel market report</a>, only 0.2 percent of artists have works that sell above $10 million. And this tiny fraction of artists represented 32% of the $63 billion art sales in 2017. White is always tinted; it could be warm or cold. And a canvas painted in all-white throws people off, partly because when looking at a blank canvas, you have to do more work than you would with Renaissance art. You have to think harder about what the piece is about. Yet, it is safe to say that Bridge was sold at such a high price due to the structure of the art market, and wealthy individuals who were willing to pay for the prestige.

2015년 "브리지(다리)"라는 작품이 크리스티(미술품 판매로 유명한 영국의 경매회사)에서 1천 500만 달러에 낙찰되었습니다. 로버트 라이먼의 작품인 "브리지"는 전체가 흰색으로 칠해진, 빈 캔버스처럼 보이는 그림입니다. 이 작품 뿐 아니라 단순하고 한가지 색으로 칠해진 다른 작품들의 어마어마한 입찰가는 예술 비평가들과 일반인들 사이에서 뜨거운 논란을 자아내고 있습니다. 로버트 라우센버그는 그의 화이트 캔버스 시리즈를 통해 주변의 빛과 그림자를 순수하게 표현하려고 했습니다. 하지만 하나의 피할 수 없는 의문이 보는 이들에게 혼란을 일으킵니다.  "과연 이 단순한 그림들이 고유의 내재된 가치를 지니고 있는가" 하는 겁니다.  사실, 캔버스를 한 가지 색으로 칠하는 데는 학위나 정식 교육이 필요하지 않습니다. 그리고 겉보기에 그저 전체가 하얀색이나 파란색으로 칠해진 그림들에 붙은 천문학적인 가격표에 눈도 꿈쩍 하지 않는 허세부리는 수집가들에 대한 비난 또한 상당합니다.  단색 작품에서 진정한 가치를 발견하는 사람들은 그것에서 혁신성과 순수함을 봅니다. 캔버스를 단색으로 칠하는 것은 불필요한 요소들을 배제하고 작품의 물리적 존재에 집중하는 순수한 행위로 이해됩니다. 동시에 표현의 범위를 확장하기 위해 질감과 음영의 차이를 조작하면 하나의 색이라도 다면적인 형태로 만들 수 있습니다. 하지만 무엇보다 중요한 것은, 당신도 전체가 하얀 그림을 그릴 수 있었지만 그러지 않았다는 것입니다. 단색화의 작가들은 그걸 했고 남보다 먼저 했습니다.  그럼에도 참신함과 상징적 순수성이 몇몇 단순한 작품들에 대한 열풍을 설명하기에 충분치 않다는 것은 인정해야 합니다. 예술 시장은 합의에 의해 움직이는 승자 독식의 경기장이기 때문에 어떤 작품들은 수백만 달러에 팔립니다. 부유한 고객들이 더 크고 권위 있는 화랑에서 미술품을 사기 위해 모이는 반면 소규모 갤러리들은 문을 닫고 있는 상황을 보면 예술품에 대한 수요는 균등하게 배분되지 않습니다. 아트 바젤 시황보고에 따르면, 작품을 천만 달러가 넘는 가격에 팔아본 작가는 전체 예술가의 0.2퍼센트에 불과합니다. 그리고 이 소수의 작가들이 2017년  630억 달러라는 예술품 총매출액의 32%를 차지했습니다. 흰색은 항상 색조를 띠므로 따뜻할 수도 차가울 수도 있습니다. 그리고 흰색으로 칠해진 캔버스는 사람들을 당황케 합니다. 빈 캔버스를 볼 때는 르네상스 작품을 볼 때보다 더 많은 생각을 해야 하기 때문입니다. 그 작품이 무엇에 관한 것인지 더 열심히 생각해야 한다는 뜻입니다. 어쨌든 "브리지"는 미술 시장의 구조와 자신의 위신을 위해 기꺼이 큰돈을 지불할 의향이 있는 부자들 덕분에 그렇게 높은 가격에 팔렸다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다.
