As agent Smith fires, Neo’s shoulders fling backward, away from the bullet’s trajectory. His body folds back, his arms circling and jacket billowing; the bullets miss his head and heart before hitting his leg.  This iconic bullet dodge scene is from The Matrix, a sci-fi thriller released in 1999. The film is full of gems [1], including other equally memorable action scenes. For over two decades, these scenes have been parodied multiple times, and the Matrix-look — small sunglasses and black leather coat — is still on trend. But its bearing on today’s culture goes beyond its contributions to fashion and cinema history. Particularly, the commentary on technology and sensory experience has become more relevant than ever.  The Matrix illustrates a dystopian future where mankind is enslaved by self-aware machines. In this future, humans are born into bondage; their bodies are harnessed to fuel machines, while their minds inhabit a simulated reality called the Matrix. “[The Matrix] is the world that has been pulled over your eyes, to blind you from the truth,” Morpheus tells Neo. The truth? Humans are attached to cords that sap biochemical and thermal energy out of them to feed machines in a post-apocalyptic world. In a simulated world, people think they are leading a normal life sometime around 1999.   The question is simple: how can you distinguish between a dream and reality when the experience technology can provide is so convincing? This question may have seemed far-fetched when the Matrix franchise was born in 1999. Two sequels came out in 2003, forming the Matrix trilogy. Time sped by, and in December 2021, we are expecting The Matrix Resurrections.  Waiting for the fourth installment, Matrix-like elements, such as inhabiting a digital world, are felt everywhere. For one thing, we mediate our lives through glowy rectangles: screens. We come together on Zoom, play Minecraft to escape the banalities [2] of life, react and comment on Instagram to express our love for friends. If anything, tech companies will make the presence of the internet clearer and more pronounced in the years to come. And for the time being, Mark Zuckerberg is at the forefront of taking the internet experience to the next level.  After Zuckerberg renamed his company to Meta on October 28, 2021, critics were swift in lampooning this move. Zuckerberg had stated that Meta will focus on creating an “embodied” internet where people are connected on an unending basis. One unexpected joke came from the Matrix franchise that dropped a modified version of its poster with the text, “Now, based on real events.” If the reference wasn’t obvious, the post had the hashtag ‘#Meta’. Perhaps, a future may come where we are always inside the internet rather than having access to it.
