“Vive la République, vive la France!” Emmanuel Macron shouted the final lines of his victory speech on the night of April 24 at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, as a thunderous cheer erupted from the crowd. That night, Macron became the first French President in 20 years to win a second term, fending off far-right challenger Marine Le Pen with a clear margin of 57% to 43%. His victory was more <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">decisive [1] than what had been suggested by final poll results, albeit lower than Macron’s 66% landslide victory over Le Pen in 2017.  A key question for Macron is whether most voters chose him because they embraced his platform, or to prevent Le Pen from winning. There isn’t nearly the same level of excitement for him compared to when he first ran, launching his own centrist political party and rising to become France’s youngest president in 2017. Since that historic election, Macron’s party has been criticized for its handling of issues including massive protests over gasoline prices, immigration, and intercultural relations. Addressing the victory rally on Sunday, Macron acknowledged that “many of our compatriots voted for me today, not to support my ideas, but simply to build a barricade against the ideas of the far-right. And at this point, I would like to thank them.” He added that he would respond to the “anger and disagreement” of the voters who chose Le Pen. On the other hand, Le Pen won more than 12 million votes—a historic high for her party. She called her score “a shining victory itself,” adding, “The ideas we represent are reaching new heights.” Le Pen, a doyenne of the far-right, has worked for years at moderating the image of the National Rally, a party founded by her father Jean-Marie Le Pen as the National Front half a century ago. In fact, her father is a highly controversial figure known for<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> dismissing [2] the Holocaust as a historical “detail” (he was fined €30,000 by the court in 2016 for making this comment). As a successor of her father’s anti-immigration, populist platform, Le Pen has had limited success polishing the rough edges of her political party. Le Pen’s defeat on Sunday was her third failed attempt at the presidency. Nonetheless, she achieved the biggest-ever score for the far right, after campaigning on<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> bread-and-butter issues [3], nationalist solutions to give priority to native French citizens while taxing “foreigners,” and promising a ban on the Muslim headscarf in public places—all of which Macron had criticized as “racist” and “divisive.”  With pro-European centrist Macron’s reelection, many have expressed their relief. “To have a far-right populist with close ties to President Vladimir V. Putin as France’s regal president would be destabilizing enough, but it would be an earthquake in the middle of Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine,” Steven Erlanger wrote for the New York Times. That said, the biggest and most important challenge for Macron will be to deliver the change he had promised to deliver by 2017 by uniting a divided France. During his first term, his actions, including his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, elicited mixed responses, and he is largely unpopular among the country’s left-leaning population. Whether Macron’s victory will lead to meaningful progress in history or a quick fix to populist sentiments remains to be seen.
