He’d like to play fetch, too, with aluminum foil balls, and he’d deliver them, sometimes alongside a freshly murdered mouse, at the foot of your freshly made bed.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">They say that cats deliver mouse corpses to you because they worry you’re too incompetent to hunt, too stupid to take care of yourself. At times, that isn’t wholly untrue.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">When I worked, he would rest his body in front of my laptop, sometimes on the keyboard, obstructing my ability to do the very thing that I sat down to do. At night, when I lie in bed, he’d sit on my chest, and as he warmed up, you’d feel the melodic vibration of an oscillating purr. George grew on me, in the same way that mold grows on trees, but less parasitically. Or perhaps just as parasitically.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">One late Sunday night, I came home to find he’d destroyed my company-provided USB hub, leaving me unable to use a mouse to do my work. Moreover, he left me responsible for the costs of the damage, having chewed through the one-inch thick cable like it was the tail of a thousand mice. By this point, I’d already grown accustomed to having frays in my shorts, from the impact of his claws over time. (At feeding time, he’d latch his claws into the hem of the shorts and meow anticipatorily at me.) <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">When I look at my shorts today, I am reminded of him. I am reminded that, although I grew up with no siblings or pets, in a haven completely within my control, I adapted quickly to living with a little eight-pound predator—a companion that resembled a furry, vibrating bean. Coming home to him was a comfort, one that, although costly, was ultimately worth it.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">I now understand why there are stereotypes of women who live with dozens of cats, although I don’t <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">foresee [3]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> myself becoming one. From cats, or perhaps from just one cat, I have learned to be okay with loss. George has taught me that the ones you love will sometimes destroy the things that are important to you. And although in the moment it might sting, perhaps it’s okay after all.
