The most commonly taken English proficiency tests in Korea are the TOEFL and the TOEIC. Both examinations are administered [1] by ETS, but as their names indicate, they serve different purposes.  TOEFL stands for ‘Test of English as a Foreign Language’, and it is often required as a prerequisite for non-native English speakers <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">to apply for higher education institutions. It measures the four key linguistic skills—reading, listening, speaking, and writing–in English, and is mainly taken by those applying for undergraduate or graduate studies. The TOEIC measures reading and listening skills— two of arguably the most required skills in a business setting. The test takers use the scores to make their resumes stand out. Other than the reading and listening tests aforementioned, ETS also offers speaking and writing versions of TOEIC. The two tests vary in difficulty. Compared to the TOEFL, the TOEIC involves a much narrower range of topics such as everyday life and simple business settings. The passages appearing in the test are from emails, advertisements, posters, and announcements.  On the contrary, as the TOEFL is a requirement for prospective [3] university students, it covers an extensive range of topics that could appear in more academic contexts. It is a three-hour exam and is notorious for [4] its difficulty and requires serious commitment and concentration in preparation. The TOEFL has speaking and writing sections—weak spots for many Koreans—making it challenging to score well. The writing section in particular involves a fight against time, as it demands test takers write two different types of essays within a 50-minute window.
