언어의 놀라운 위력을 경험하는 방법

When I was in high school, my Spanish teacher repeatedly warned the class to not rely on or generally even use an online English-Spanish translator, like Google Translate. These translators, she’d say, were far too imperfect to provide consistently reliable translations, and sometimes were entirely incorrect or <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">off base [1]. A rebellious teen, I frequently ignored her warnings, and was caught a few times using it in class or in my homework, which often featured terrible grammar and structure courtesy of terrible translations. Back then, I did not know of the power of language, or the use of learning a second one. By my third year of college, I hadn’t taken a language class since my third year of high school, but had to take two semesters worth to graduate. So, I took a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">leap of faith [2] and enrolled in beginner French, and absolutely loved it.  Remembering the stern warnings from my Spanish teacher, I distanced myself from translators in college, using them only to learn a new word when my current French vocabulary was too limited. As I fell in love with the language, I immersed myself in the culture primarily by listening to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Francophone [3] music, such as by Belgian rapper Stromae, whose music touches on absent fathers, failed relationships, suicidal ideation, and more sensitive topics. But I wasn’t fluent enough to understand the subtexts of his songs, so I relented and looked up French-English translations, only to be thoroughly disappointed by the results. I could somewhat grasp the tone of the songs as their lyrics were translated, but I couldn’t help noticing that their lyrical composition wasn’t as straightforward or coherent as were my favorite English songs. I received only a surface-level explanation of a thoroughly rich piece of art. So even with the translation, I couldn’t fully understand what I was hearing, or the purpose behind the sounds, not because the artists were incompetent, but because no robot can quite replicate the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">sanctity [4] of human language.  Language can break down barriers, diffuse cultures, and open our eyes to new experiences and perspectives we’d never know were there without courageous <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">forays [5] into foreign phonemes. We can’t really experience the expansive power of language, however, with shortcuts like translators. Although they may help us pick up a word or two, or determine a correct spelling, they’re imperfect. Using language—learning and internalizing various modes of expressive communication—requires commitment, human dedication to transcend borders and tell stories rich in detail and nuance. So as much as we may idealize a future in which robots perform our dirty work, language learning seems safe from automation.
