In a way, they were the <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">precursor [1] <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">to the modern day zoo, with a private collection for aristocrats or wealthy individuals to show their power. Records of zoos in later civilizations such as<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#ff9900;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">China, Rome, and Greece exist, but the zoo as we know developed in the late 18th century.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">During the era of enlightenment, the modern zoo was developed for scientists to study animal behavior and anatomy–they needed to keep animals in enclosed spaces for research. Today, zoos are meant to function like museums, for education and for entertainment. However, we often forget that animals are not inanimate objects that can be preserved behind glass walls or iron bars. In many zoos, animals’ quality of life are seldom discussed. <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">For example, elephants and dolphins, two intelligent species that usually live in herds, are locked in small, cramped spaces. Zoologists have observed that these animals live with depression from a young age to the moment they die.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Zoo proponents, however, argue that zoos function to protect endangered animals. By keeping these species in an enclosure, endangered animals are free from the dangers of poachers and the pollution that might’ve cost them their habitat in the first place. (Though, it should be mentioned that there are alternatives to the typical zoo model, such as animal sanctuaries or wildlife refuges, that provide better living conditions.) <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Indeed, “ethical,” animal-friendly zoos do exist, and the US, Australia, and European Union have associations akin to The ZAA (The Zoo and Aquarium Association) that are responsible for running <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">endangered [2] <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#1d1c1d;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">animal protection programs: these programs ensure the species reproduce and can gradually return to the wild.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">What do you think about zoos? While they provide an opportunity for humans to conveniently observe exotic animals, if you were a racoon, would you like to be kept in a zoo? Are zoos a necessary evil for studying and preserving certain animal species, and if so, how can we improve the living conditions of animals in zoos?
