In a long speech the day before ordering the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin justified his actions by claiming that Ukraine is not a real nation, and that the Russians and Ukrainians are “one people.”<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> What exactly makes a nation “real,” however? What is a nation at all?  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Acclaimed [1] political scientist Benedict Anderson defines the nation as an “imagined community,” because “the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion.” For example, people have a mental image of what they share with other members of their nation when they watch the Olympic Games; they see their national team, and they think of themselves as represented by their team, along with everyone else in the country who is sitting in front of the television and doing the same thing.   Furthermore, the nation is a “community” because it is perceived as a “deep comradeship,” meaning that everyone is an equal member of the nation that will treat other members like they share a deep part of themselves—that they are “<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">comrades [2].” Anderson himself points out that all communities larger than villages are imagined in this way.  To say that something is imagined is not to say that it does not exist. However, Anderson’s view does have some <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">implications [3] for what we might think about nations. For example, it implies that nations are much more <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">malleable [4] than we might assume; what is needed for a nation is that a large group of people think of themselves as belonging to a nation, not that they necessarily share history, ethnicity, or language.  These factors may contribute, as people need <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">something to imagine they share with the other members of the nation, but there are always exceptions. For example, Switzerland has a number of different dominant languages, and there are many nations that contain different ethnic groups. The people of Belarus spoke Belarussian for a long time before they came to think of themselves as “Belarussian,” which only happened as recently as the 1920s or 1930s.  Nationalism, the idea of supporting your nation’s interests, is a very powerful (and even destructive) force, as Putin’s invasion shows. Yet, Putin has inadvertently strengthened Ukrainian national identity, since the population, whether they speak Russian or not, is almost totally unified against the attack.  Countless people have lived and died for their nations, and think of their national identity as one of the most important parts of themselves. Nationalism has been both praised and harshly criticized. Whether you approve of it or not, we should make sure to think critically when we discuss them.
