Note that the first two can be rather counterproductive in excess. Venting is strongly expressing your anger, with much need to be heard rather than advised. Ruminating is dwelling on a thought or emotion that would better be forgotten. Even just the act of paying attention to our habits can start shifting them. So, take a breath before you call your friend to vent.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“It’s crucial, if you’re venting, to know that you’re venting and to tell the person you’re venting,” Ms. Gilbertson said. It allows individuals the space and time to sit back and formally organize thoughts. They can help us self-regulate our emotions and figure out how best to express them.
