Dieting is typically done to control, prevent, or treat health disorders such as diabetes, obesity, or *celiac disease.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">The word “diet” likely comes from the Greek word “diaita” which refers to the idea of a “healthy lifestyle” including the mind and body. Perhaps the first modern dietician was Scottish Dr. George Cheyne, who recovered from obesity and chronic disease by beginning a vegetarian diet, drinking milk instead of alcoholic beverages, and exercising in the fresh air. However, dieting was not truly scientific until Dr. Lulu Hunt Peters’ <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Diet and Health with Key to the Calories<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> was published in 1918. Hunt popularized the concept of calories, a scientific unit to measure the energy stored in food, and advocated counting and reducing calorie intake in order to lose weight.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Today, the number of popular diets has <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">mushroomed [2]<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">. From keto to paleo, to gluten-free to raw-food diets, there are many competing and contradictory diets which claim to improve our health. These fads may be popular, but it’s worth asking whether they’re actually healthful, or filled with empty promises.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">First, let’s look at the popular paleo diet, which suggests we eat mostly meat, nuts, fruits, and vegetables and avoid processed food, grains, legumes, and dairy products. The idea behind this diet is that human bodies evolved to survive by hunting and gathering in the Paleolithic period, and thus the types of foods that were available in these primitive times are more natural to the human body. Although the paleo diet is considered effective for weight loss due to its restrictive nature, it can cause deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D. Moreover, meats typically contain high amounts of saturated fat, which can cause heart disease and cholesterol buildup; cave people in Paleolithic times typically didn’t live long enough to experience related chronic diseases.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Another popular trend is the keto diet, popular with celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian. The keto diet essentially reduces carbohydrates to no more than 5% of daily calories, replacing them with fat for 75% of daily calories and protein for 20% of daily calories. This diet has gained popularity over the past 5 years through bodybuilding forums and the Joe Rogan Podcast. Keto advocates claim to lose as much as 1 pound per day. However, keto was originally created as a treatment for epilepsy and seizures in small children who were too young to take strong drugs. While highly effective at preventing *epileptic seizures, the keto diet is generally considered unhealthy and potentially dangerous for the general population due to the extreme changes it causes for your body and blood chemistry.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Next, let’s examine the gluten-free diet. Similar to the keto diet, the gluten-free diet was formulated to treat a specific health disorder: celiac disease. Gluten is a protein found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley which causes painful and potentially dangerous *gastrointestinal symptoms for people with celiac disease. In fact, a gluten-free diet may be helpful for people with certain types of *autoimmune disorders, including irritable *bowel syndrome and type 1 diabetes. However, beyond this, there is little scientific evidence that eating gluten-free gives you any particular health benefits.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Another trendy diet is the “raw food” diet. The raw food diet is composed entirely of raw or uncooked foods, such as sashimi, sprouted grains, or some fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut. Advocates of this diet claim that raw foods are more healthful because cooking degrades certain nutrients and creates unhealthy chemicals like trans fats. However, most doctors view the raw food diet as <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">pseudoscientific [3]<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> and unhealthy. Many foods are risky or even toxic to eat uncooked, such as raw chicken (which is likely to cause food poisoning) or raw potato (which contains the toxin solanine). Additionally, it is extremely difficult to consume enough calories on a raw food diet, likely causing nutrient deficiencies if the diet is followed for an extended period.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Doctors and certified dietitians rarely prescribe these trendy diets for patients, unless they’re treating specific diseases. Processed foods like white rice or potato chips, fatty and cured meats like steak or pepperoni, and sweets like cookies should be eaten in moderation. Ultimately, what’s important is to discover a diet you can stick to and maintain a healthy body, rather than a diet that is trendiest amongst celebrities.
