The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped the labor market in <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">innumerable [1] and unexpected ways, such as how it invited the workplace into the homes of millions through remote work. While this shift has certain corporate and personal benefits, like increased productivity and flexibility, it has also <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">fanned the flames [2] of burnout since the lines between work and life have been so blurred.  In response, some exhausted workers are “<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">quiet quitting,” meaning they have stopped going above and beyond at work to regain greater control of their leisure time. They are not leaving their jobs but instead are recalibrating their work-life balance to lean more towards life.  Quiet quitters are refusing new projects, not answering Slack messages or emails outside work hours, or staying late at the office. In short, they are fulfilling only those responsibilities listed in their job descriptions and using the extra time to improve themselves. They’re taking the time to focus on their mental, physical and emotional health, and reevaluate their relationship with their work to pinpoint what gives them the most meaning. Some workers use quiet quitting as a form of silent protest. For them, the old <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">adage [3] “work hard, play hard” has not resulted in any additional benefits, like a promotion, raise, or even better reputation. Feeling like their hard work has not been appropriately recognized, workers are now doing the bare minimum as a way to “get back” at their employers.  While quiet quitting may remove you from the worst parts of hustle culture, and give you more time to focus on yourself, it’s certainly not the answer to toxic work culture. An airing of grievances with your manager may alleviate some of the pressures of a toxic workplace, and set you on the course for a healthier relationship with your work. This would be better in the long-term than quiet quitting. Moreover, if you entertain quiet quitting, it may be a sign that you are totally disengaged from your job, and that you’re no longer passionate about the work you do. If this is the case, searching for a new job that gives your efforts meaning may better improve your well-being than would quiet quitting. Quiet quitting is an appealing option to many, especially those who feel the pandemic has worsened their relationship with work. Like many potential solutions, however, quiet quitting has its shortcomings, so before mentally resigning from your work, you should consider if quiet quitting is the right answer for you.
