Godiva Chocolatier is a gourmet chocolate brand that has an international presence. The company has operated for over 90 years and is currently in 100 countries worldwide.  This beloved chocolate brand’s success can<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> be attributed to [1] its clever marketing. Despite its cultural ambiguity, the company has done thorough image-making as Belgian. In fact, the company has been under non-Belgian ownership for the better part of its history. Four decades after the Draps founded Godiva in Brussels, Belgium, the brand was sold to an American company in 1967. The chocolatier’s ownership changed hands once again in 2007 to a Turkish company. Most recently, in 2019, MBK Partners from South Korea bought a stake and<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> took over [2] operations in Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Another successful branding effort of Godiva has been associating itself with the impression of both quality and accessibility. Godiva isn’t a local boutique where an artisan painstakingly produces truffles one by one. At the same time, it separates itself from other popular brands like Hershey’s with a promise to deliver quality. This niche positioning that combines quality and accessibility doesn’t have many direct competitors, though competitors may include Lindt and Ghirardelli.  The chocolatier also uses different marketing approaches in North America and in East Asia. In North America, the brand leverages accessibility omnichannel distribution, using both online and offline channels. In East Asia, the emphasis is put on premium branding through higher pricing and <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">brick-and-mortar [3] stores. In fact, similar products are more expensive in South Korea than in the US, adjusting for exchange rates and tariffs. (A 19-piece gold collection box retails for $32 in the US, while the same product with one more piece sells at ₩67,000, almost $50, in South Korea.) After failed attempts to expand cafes in North America, the company has relied more heavily on accessible channels, such as drugstores, supermarkets, and online retail, to “democratize” chocolate in the US. This two-fold approach isn’t particularly new. Products and services that rely on perceptions of social status have historically <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">taken advantage of [4] luxury marketing in East Asia, while appealing to affordability or practicality in other regions. Although this strategy is not a recession-proof one, given Godiva’s brand awareness in the East Asia region, it has worked well.

고디바 쇼콜라티에는 전세계적으로 각광을 받고 있는 고급 초콜릿 회사입니다. 90년이 넘는 역사를 가진 이 회사는 현재 세계 100여 개국에 널리 퍼져 있습니다.  사랑받는 초콜릿 브랜드 고디바 쇼콜라티에가 성공한 배경에는 놀라운 마케팅이 있습니다. 이 브랜드가 가진 문화적인 모호성에도 불구하고, 고디바는 그간 벨기에 제품으로 철저한 이미지 메이킹을 해왔습니다. 사실 이 회사의 역사를 보면 벨기에인의 소유가 아니었던 기간이 더 깁니다. 드랍스 가족이 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 고디바를 만든지 40년이 지난 1967년에, 고디바는 미국 회사에 매각되었습니다. 그 후 2007년 소유권이 어느 터키 회사로 넘어가면서 주인이 다시 한번 바뀌었습니다. 최근 2019년에는 한국의 MBK파트너스가 지분을 매입하고 한국, 일본, 호주, 뉴질랜드에서의 운영권을 인수했습니다. 고디바의 또 다른 성공적인 브랜드 전략은 자기 제품을 고품질과 접근성 모두와 연관짓는 것입니다. 고디바는 장인이 일일이 정성을 다해 손으로 초콜릿을 빚어내는 동네 브랜드가 아닙니다. 그러면서도 고품질의 초콜릿을 제공하겠다는 약속을 전면에 내세워 허쉬와 같은 다른 대중적인 브랜드들과는 차별화를 꾀합니다. 품질과 접근성을 결합한 이런 틈새를 노리는 회사에게 경쟁사는 린트와 기라델리 정도로, 직접적인 경쟁 상대는 많지 않습니다.  고디바는 또한 북미와 동아시아 지역에서 서로 다른 마케팅 전략을 사용하고 있습니다. 북미에서는 온라인과 오프라인을 이용한 유통 채널 다각화를 통해 접근성을 높이고 있습니다. 동아시아에서는 더 높은 가격과 오프라인 상점 확대를 통해 프리미엄 브랜드로 자리매김을 하는 데 중점을 두고 있습니다. 실제로 고디바의 같은 제품은 환율과 관세를 고려해 계산해보면 미국보다 한국에서 더 비쌉니다. (19개들이 골드 컬렉션 박스의 미국 소매가는 32달러인 반면, 같은 제품의 20개들이 박스는 한국에서 6만 7천 원, 거의 50달러에 판매되고 있습니다.) 북미에서 카페 사업을 확장하려는 시도가 실패한 후, 고디바는 미국에서 초콜릿을 “민주화”하기 위해 상점, 슈퍼마켓 및 인터넷 상점과 같은 소비자의 접근이 용이한 채널에 더 많이 의존하고 있습니다. 이런 두 갈래 접근 방식은 특별히 새로운 것은 아닙니다. 사회적 지위라는 인식에 의존하는 상품과 서비스는 역사적으로 동아시아에서는 고급품 마케팅을 활용하는 한편, 다른 지역에서는 저렴한 가격이나 실용성을 강조해 왔습니다. 이러한 전략이 경기 침체로부터 안전한 것은 아니라 하더라도 동아시아 지역에서 고디바가 얻은 인기를 볼 때 그 전략은 성공하고 있습니다.
