Mr. Iger, 71, had previously served as CEO and Chairman of Disney from 2005 to 2020, transforming it into the world's most admired media and entertainment company. During his 15-year <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">tenure [1], he secured the acquisition of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and was named <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Time magazine’s Businessperson of the Year for 2019. The announcement of his termination and the return of his predecessor dropped jaws in Hollywood and prompted comparisons between the two Bobs.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Why was Mr. Chapek fired?Alan Murray and David Meyer, writing for <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Fortune, ask: “Did Chapek get pushed out because of problems with his ‘stakeholders’—particularly in reaction to Florida’s so-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">*—or was his ouster a standard case of failing to meet the demands of shareholders?” Mr. Chapek’s ousting can be explained by both: he failed on both fronts. Shareholders were irritated by Disney’s lackluster performance since he took over, and his undiplomatic handling of tricky situations, including the controversy in Florida, speaks volumes for his shortcomings as a leader.  In 2022 alone, Disney’s stock price was down 40%. In the quarter that ended on October 1, the company reported a $1.5 billion loss in its streaming division, and the revenue and earnings per share missed expectations by a small margin, though for the first time in recent years. Activist funds, including Dan Loeb’s Third Point, were pushing for change to get the company out of the rut.  Financial performance aside, Mr. Chapek seems to have missed the mark on emotional intelligence as well. His success as a Disney’s leader depended on his tactful<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> handling of relationships with a broad array of stakeholders including: employees who were offended by the Florida situation, customers with young children with particular views on Disney’s political stance, politicians who passed the Florida law, and Mr. Iger, whose legacy overshadowed and intimidated him.  One lesson from Mr. Iger’s surprise reinstatement is that today’s CEOs face pressure from an expanding roster of people whose support they ultimately need to excel. Ron DeSantis’ approval. The bill was designed to limit discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Disney’s public stance on this hotly-debated issue drew criticism from both sides of the political spectrum: its right-leaning audience voiced concerns that Disney was not to be trusted with children, while its left-leaning audience accused the company of half-hearted value signaling. Disney also lost the special tax status at its Orlando theme parks in Florida as a result of opposing the bill.
