The West seeks inspiration from Asian countries, including Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, whose students have shown top performance in standardized exams, while Asian countries have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of their intense academic environment, leading them to emphasize a more holistic approach to education.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Comparing global education systems is challenging, but some generalizations might emerge when looking at Eastern and Western education. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Most stereotypically, Western education systems seem to emphasize creativity and sociability over <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">rote [1] <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">memorization. Some students learn through the Socratic method and open discussion in which each participant (including the instructor) sits on a level playing field. By extension, extracurricular activities tend to be highly social in nature, and teachers don’t necessarily give students regular homework assignments. In comparison, the Eastern system of education emphasizes good exam outcomes, with students often going to “cram schools” after a typical eight hours of schooling to get ahead of others and to improve performance. Students might get home closer to midnight, having started the school day at eight in the morning, and still have homework to catch up on.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Since education systems reflect culture, and vice versa, a student familiar with the Western system may be more apt to question or challenge an idea that a professor presents, while a student in the Eastern system may be more hesitant to do so. Ironically, however, because hard work is viewed as the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">predominant [2] <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">factor leading to success in the Eastern system, failures by conventional standards more often result in blame being placed on the student. By comparison, a failing student in the West might be viewed as a reflection of problems in their institutions.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">According to Yong Zhao, a Chinese teacher working at the University of Kansas specializing in education, the West has become increasingly<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> infatuated with [3]<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"> education systems in the East. Zhao believes that having observed students educated in the East performing better on standardized tests, Westerners have sought to emulate some of the systems of the East. By comparison, Eastern parents and educators, having seen the effects of Eastern-style education on their children, seek to promote Western styles of learning. Zhao argues that in fact, however, the realization of this obsession would be only to swap one set of problems for another, and that neither system is well-equipped to prepare children for the future. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Regardless of the merits of each system, it’s important to keep in mind that inherent biases exist as a cultural byproduct. That said, in any culture, the goal is to improve the quality and accessibility of education.
