Netflix is a global Over-The-Top (OTT) player that offers subscribers unlimited access to its content. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic drove up the streaming giant’s stock price. People looking for entertainment, cooped up in their rooms due to outbreaks and stay-at-home orders, turned to Netflix instead of visiting movie theaters. The streaming platform added a whopping 30 million subscribers in the first half of 2020 as the coronavirus started to spread; Multiplexes experienced a 90% reduction in daily visitors on a global scale. At the same time, Netflix responded to the global health crisis by adding a new pandemic-friendly feature, Netflix Party—a Chrome extension that allows multiple users to watch videos and chat simultaneously. This feature was what consumers who were craving connection during the pandemic needed.  But the increase of subscribers has slowed down as the pandemic started to wane [1]: in the first quarter of 2021, the platform only registered 4 million new users. By extension, it missed its target for the first quarter in 2021. This decline is attributable [2] to a lighter content slate in the first half of 2021 since films could not be produced on schedule due to COVID-19-induced restrictions. Moreover, some analysts project that people waking up from the pandemic hibernation will prefer the outdoors. But reflecting on the strengths of Netflix, perhaps the company will emerge stronger from its disappointing first quarter of 2021:  <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#161c2d;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Benefiting from the long-tail effect: The “long-tail” is a statistical pattern where a larger share of occurrences happens farther away from the center of the distribution. In business, this is when niche products, en masse, are sold more than mainstream products. Digital content providers and e-commerces, untethered to physical restrictions, can tap into the farther end of the long tail using recommendation engines. Popularizing documentaries on Netflix is one example. Documentaries used to be considered a minor genre aired in non-prime time, but documentary series like Street Food, Tiger King, and Our Planet have trended on Netflix, incentivizing the production and distribution of niche content that broadcasters would avoid. The commercial appeal of these documentaries on the streaming platform has added variety to the mix and drawn more subscribers.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#161c2d;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Using local content to entertain global audiences: Unlike other OTT channels like Disney and HBO, Netflix utilizes local content. For example, shows produced in Korean and other local languages around the world are translated into over 30 different languages so that Netflix audiences from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds can enjoy them. In short, the platform is absorbing localized content to offer an eclectic [3] mix of shows.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#161c2d;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">A robust personal recommendation system: The company openly hires only star players, and developers are no exception. Unlike many other media companies, Netflix has invested heavily in technology to perfect its personalized recommendations or big-data processing technologies. This technological foundation also helps the platform to adjust to new demands and trends as they come up.</li></ul> Yet, whether Netflix’s competitive edge [4] is sustainable is a point of contention. And while some analysts say that the company’s stock will rebound [5] sooner or later, competition is getting tough as other players like Disney Plus or HBO Max in the market are making up ground on the streaming giant. On the consumer’s side, perhaps people’s inevitable streaming fatigue after months of pandemic hibernation could drive users away. Quite contrary to Netflix’s confident remark made in 2017 that its only competition is with sleep, the future of Netflix remains to be seen.
