The movie, following a rock and roll band, definitely evokes nostalgia for the 1960s.

The author claims her novel is original but it contains all the usual horror tropes.

In it, the narrative arc provides additional revelations on the Bridgerton family, exploring an extension of themes explored in the first season, including those of: head versus heart, duty versus love, and the role of honor, romance in family and society.  On 27th January 2021, Bridgerton became Netflix’s most-watched original series, streamed by 82 million households worldwide in its first 28 days online. What is it about Bridgerton that made it so popular?  For one thing, Bridgerton is a period drama. The term “period drama” (also “costume drama” or “historical drama”) covers a wide range of TV shows and movies set during a particular time in the past, with costumes and sets that evoke that era. Common themes presented and explored include wealth and class, romance and matchmaking, family dynamics, and the social conventions of past society. The works of early 19th century British author Jane Austen are a prime example, with novels like Pride and Prejudice having been adapted numerous times over the last century. At its height in 2013, the TV series Downton Abbey, portraying the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants, had a global audience of 120 million in 220 countries and territories, and Netflix’s The Crown, portraying the life of Queen Elizabeth II, has been watched by 73 million households.  So, why do we like them? Watching period dramas is a great form of escapism [1]. Viewers get to remove themselves from the stresses of modern life and enjoy the relative simplicity of another time, indulging their nostalgia [2]. Also, let’s not forget the draw of the visuals alone, with gorgeous costumes and grand settings continually pleasing the eye. Moreover, there is something alluring about slow-burning romances: love stories that gradually unfold within the context of strict, prudish social conventions, where even a longing glance or a hand-hold feels like a victory. It’s quite the contrast to today’s dating scene. But if historical dramas only had their particularities, they wouldn’t be as appealing to modern audiences. That said, they also feature timeless characters and universal themes. Although set in the past, the themes of love, family, and class are ones we can all relate to. And the characters are distinctive, memorable, and most importantly, human — they have wit, make mistakes, and acquire self-knowledge through experience.  But not everyone enjoys dramas set in the past. The pacing of period dramas, especially when compared to other genres, can be just too slow for some, failing to sustain audience interest. Another factor that might drive some viewers away is the storylines and character tropes [3] (eg. handsome, eligible bachelors; overbearing mothers) that feel repetitive and overdone. It’s easy to lose interest when you can predict exactly what’s going to happen and no jeopardy exists. Others say that period dramas present a romanticized version of the past, which is fixated on the aristocracy, and ignore historically accurate hardships in favor of frivolous balls and romances.  It’s perhaps no surprise that a show like Bridgerton broke records during a global pandemic — psychologists have argued that the predictability of period dramas helps to alleviate anxiety in times of uncertainty. Because our brains like patterns and symmetry, they are arguably the TV/movie genre equivalent of comfort food, like a big bowl of ice cream.  What about the future and the post-pandemic era? New releases like Bridgerton, Hulu’s The Great, and the movie The Personal History of David Copperfield have all moved the genre in a slightly new direction, retaining many of the classic tropes but also adding more modern touches in terms of diverse casting, risqué humor and romance scenes, and extravagant, colorful costumes. To ensure their enduring appeal, it might be important for period dramas to provide both reassuringly classic stories and keep up with the times.
