Tencent Holdings: a less-known tech conglomerate  BusinessAlibaba Group (BABA) is an e-commerce and retail company, while Baidu (BIDU) is known for its focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). But Tencent Holdings, also one of China’s largest technology companies, is not always on investors’ radars [1]. Founded in 1998, the company is headquartered in Shenzhen with offices in Tokyo, Seoul, Amsterdam, and Palo Alto. Tencent’s corporate mission is to innovate and promote sustainability while paving the way for a digital future.  The company operates on multiple dimensions and fields relating to technology, including social media, video gaming, and cloud services. Some of its most popular offerings include instant-messaging applications such as QQ and WeChat. Tencent Games owns League of Legends; Tencent Sports exclusively broadcasts national and international sports events, including the French Open and the NBA; the company’s fintech division operates WeChat Pay and Credit Card Repayment.  FinancialsOn June 16, 2004, Tencent went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKG). The company’s market capitalization was expected to range between HK$4.66 billion and HK$6.22 billion after its Initial Public Offering (IPO), and on May 7, 2021, share prices were at HK$600 per share and the market cap at HK$5.75 trillion with an average trading volume of 25.1 million shares.  Tencent reports its earnings in renminbi (RMB), China’s national currency. Per its annual financial reports, the company has seen a steady increase in revenue and profits over the years. FY 2020, the company reported a revenue of RMB 482,064 million, an impressive 27.8% increase from the previous year. Net income (or net profits) rounded up to RMB 122,742 million, which is a 30.1% increase from the past fiscal. A setback: political headwinds [2]? On August 3, 2021, Tencent Holdings and other Chinese gaming companies’ share prices sank in HKG trading after a state-owned media outlet criticized video gaming as “spiritual opium.” The harsh comment from Economic Information Daily came after months of elevating tension between Beijing and the Chinese internet industry, which connects one billion users on the internet. With the final blast, investors felt the government’s pressure against the industry and hurried to pull billions of dollars out of Chinese technology companies, fearing that more regulations would follow.  The article from Economic Information Daily didn’t pinpoint the source of criticism (the state? its editors?), nor did it directly indicate future policy changes. But it singled out Tencent, explaining the downsides of video gaming and adding, “No industry or sport should develop at the price of destroying a generation.” And since the media platform is state-owned, foreign investors assumed the article reflected the view of Beijing officials.  Then, the article mysteriously disappeared, only to reappear within hours with some harsher language removed. In the meantime, Tencent and other companies in the sector had suffered the consequences. Shares of Tencent initially dropped 10% and later partly recovered to close 6.1% lower at HK$446 per share. NetEase shares, another Chinese video gaming company, dropped nearly 9%.  In response, Tencent announced on its WeChat network that it would apply stricter rules for minor users. Gaming time limitation and a more thorough approach to detecting minors who lie about their age appeared as a part of the plan.  Scrutiny [3] from Chinese authorities is not new to this industry. In 2019, mainland regulators limited the amount of time young people could play online video games. Yet lack of novelty doesn’t make an action desirable. While foreign investors closely observe whether Beijing would take this pressure to the next level, potentially stammering the growth of domestic video gaming companies, we might consider the state’s role in regulating businesses.
