Motivated employees, those who want to work, are the building blocks [1] for corporate success. A group of people who simply don’t care will not have a bright future ahead. And people should be motivated to do the right thing. Picture a rowing team that randomly swings their oars— “disoriented” aptly captures the scene.  It would be desirable if everyone could motivate themselves in a well-aligned way. This statement is as unrealistic as saying it would be nice if every day was sunny. Unlike the weather, though, there are ways to deliberately influence employee motivation—and managers have a role to play.  Just because you can, it doesn't mean that it’s easy. Jobs can entail tasks that one wouldn’t do if they weren’t paid; people are sometimes paid to do boring work. For your part as a manager, there is no magic pill that will make employees love grunt work. Although magic may never happen, changes can definitely happen. Start by aiming for little changes. Here are some tips that sum up what I’ve learned: Help employees understand their importance<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Humans seek meaning in their existence; if workers feel like their work is meaningless, they would be less motivated. You can directly tell your people the importance of their work or mention how big an impact they are generating. Another approach is to help them know how their role fits into the bigger picture. Explaining this would allow them to infer their crucial role in the operation. </li></ul> Communicate clearly<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Transparency is important in keeping your people motivated. If you don’t clearly state what you like and dislike, people will feel lost. How could anyone be enthusiastic if they don’t know what to be enthusiastic about?</li></ul> Check in regularly <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">There is nothing more frustrating than feeling like you are talking to a wall. The same logic applies at work. Don’t draw a firewall between yourself and your people. Check in regularly to make them know that you see them and their work.</li></ul> Give the green light<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Sometimes, you may feel indecisive about suggestions made by your people. Rather than being preemptive, give the green light and observe carefully. If issues present themselves, you can reconsider. This type of approach can encourage employees to take the initiative and give them opportunities to learn for themselves.  </li></ul> Ultimately, incorporating these approaches is more of an art than a science. With time and patience, you will be able to not only utilize these tips, but have your own tricks under your belt [2].

의욕적인 구성원, 즉 일하고 싶은 직원들은 기업 성공의 기본 요소입니다. 일에 별 신경쓰지 않는 사람들이 모여 있는 기업에게 미래는 없습니다. 그리고 직원들에게는 일을 제대로 할 동기가 주어져야 합니다. 제멋대로 노를 젓는 조정팀의 모습을 그려보세요.
