Oxford English Dictionary rides the K-wave with a big Korean update	

Some English words have counterintuitive pronunciation– looking up the etymology can help!

Your attention to detail is great as an editor, but too much emphasis and etymologies when referring to dictionaries is a bit unnecessary.

The legal discourse is inseparable from its parlance: what people talk about always influences and is influenced by how they tend to express themselves.

The Oxford English Dictionary Gets a K-update

대박!

Try to say these words out loud: hallyu, mukbang, aegyo, daebak. Do they ring a bell? These are Korean words that entered the Oxford English Dictionary in November 2021 alongside 22 other Korean words.  The Oxford Dictionary is one of the most authoritative sources on English. It lists more than 600,000 words with their etymologies [1]  and  3 million quotes from seminal works of literature. Since words cannot be taken out once they are added to this dictionary, editors carefully select new entries based on contemporary English use.   The Oxford Dictionary’s history stretches back to more than a century ago, but 2021 marks a unique year for  Koreans; the 26 Korean words that made their ways into this dictionary dwarfed all Korean words added in prior years in number, starting from 1976 when kimchi was added.  This influx of Korean words can be attributed to a phenomenon called hallyu. Hallyu, or the Korean Wave indicates a recent trend that has swept the global stage. The presence of South Korean pop culture has steadily grown, and with the exposure, Korean words started to be thrown around in English conversations. Thus, the decision to add Korean words to an English dictionary reflects Oxford's stance that it will recognize and record any word that is part of English parlance [2] regardless of its origins.  Given that the dictionary already had more than 500 Japanese words, the recent update to add 26 Korean words may not seem particularly interesting. However, excitement was expressed in an Oxford Dictionary blog post released on November 5: “Daebak! The OED gets a K-update.”  Oxford’s recent K-update is a reminder that the English language is partially shaped by the influence of diverse cultures, including that of Korea. Korean culture, in fact, is a rich culture that has much more to offer-- will a day come, then, when bendaetteok, instead of “Korean pancake,” is widely recognized?

Hallyu, mukbang, aegyo, daebak: 소리내어 읽어 보세요. 어디서 들어본 적이 있다 생각되시나요? 이것은 2021년 11월, 22개의 또다른 한국어 단어들과 함께 옥스포드 영어 사전에 등재된 한국어 입니다. 옥스포드 사전은 영어에 관한 가장 권위 있는 자료 중 하나입니다. 여기에는 60 만개 이상의 단어와 그 어원, 그리고 3백만 개의 주요 문학작품 인용문이 수록되어 있습니다. 단어가 이 사전에 등재되면 삭제 할 수 없기 때문에, 편집자들은 현대의 영어 사용을 신중하게 살펴 새로 등재할 항목을 선택합니다.  옥스퍼드 사전의 역사는 한 세기 이상 전으로 거슬러 올라가지만, 2021년은 한국인에게 매우 특별한 해였습니다. 2021년 사전에 유입된 26개의 한국어 단어들은 1976년 단어 “김치”의 등재 후 작년까지 추가된 모든 한국어 단어의 수를 왜소하게 보이게 합니다. 이러한 한국어 단어의 유입은 한류라고 불리는 현상 덕분이라고 할 수 있습니다.  한국 웨이브라고도 불리는 한류는 세계 무대를 휩쓴 최근 트렌드를 나타냅니다. 한국 대중문화는 꾸준히 성장해 왔고, 그 노출이 증가하면서 영어 대화 중 한국어 단어가 등장하기 시작했습니다. 따라서 영어 사전에 한국어 단어를 추가하기로 결정한것은 어원에 관계없이 영어 사용의 일부가 된 단어를 인식하고 기록한다는 옥스포드의 입장을 반영한 것으로 볼 수 있습니다. 옥스포드 영어 사전이 이미 500개 이상의 일본어 단어를 수록하고 있는 것을 감안하면, 26개의 한국어 단어를 추가한 최근의 업데이트는 특별해 보이지 않을수도 있습니다. 하지만, 11월 5일 공개된 옥스포드사전 블로그에서는 "대박! 옥스포드 영어사전이 K-업데이트를 힌다”며 흥분감이 표현 되었습니다. 옥스퍼드의 최근 K-업데이트는 영어가 부분적으로 한국을 포함한 다양한 문화의 영향을 받고 있음을 상기시켜 줍니다. 사실 한국 문화는 훨씬 더 제공 할 것이 많은 풍부한 문화입니다. 이제 코리안 팬케이크 라는 말 대신 “빈대떡” 이라고 널리알려지는 날이 곧 오는 것일까요?
