He is known as a neighborhood failure and struggles to build a healthy relationship with his daughter. With loan sharks threatening to take one of his kidneys and his mother in need of surgery, Gi-hun seizes an opportunity to win 38 million dollars by playing a series of games alongside 455 other players.  The contest consists of popular children's games, such as Red Light, Green Light, and Tug of War. The catch? Losing a game will get him gunned down to incineration. South Korean thriller “Squid Game” on Netflix follows Gi-hun and the other desperate and indebted players as they shed blood to survive in a competition for money.  “Squid game” became a global sensation soon after its release on Sept. 17. A month after its release, it gained 111 million views, making it the second most popular title on Netflix. As of October 2021, the show is expected to hit a revenue of $900 million. Few had predicted this Korean production to be such a massive success. Julia Alexander, a senior strategy analyst at Parrot Analytics, told NBC News, “I would put good money that the [Netflix] executives had no idea this was going to be a global hit.” Reasons for the runaway hit of “Squid Game” are everywhere. Some attribute the show’s popularity to its meme-readiness, while others say it became popular due to social media. But most importantly, the show’s political commentary on poverty, greed, and capitalism runs through the theme — that commentary might have resonated with modern sensibilities. Although the game itself is fictional, the financial challenges and obstacles faced by the players struck a chord with the viewers. In the show, a stark [2] contrast between the wealthy and the poor is illustrated with a suggestion that the world outside the tournament is just as dehumanizing and hopeless.  This dystopian portrayal of reality hasn’t sat well with some people, like Frank Bruni, who wrote in the New York Times, “That this vision appeals to so many viewers, especially young ones, suggests a chilling and bleak perspective — on capitalism, on “freedom,” on individual agency — that should stop us in our tracks.” At the same time, one would give more credit to the show’s intent given the knowledge of the economic circumstances in South Korea, where “Squid Game” was produced. <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#0e101a;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Unaffordable housing prices: Under the administration of President Moon Jae-In, South Korean housing prices have risen about 50%. The show contains some elements of good story-telling, but it also seems to be a more violent iteration of the Hunger Games.
