One Year of Trash in a Mason Jar

There is a growing number of people who strive to reduce their trash piles. The waste they produce in a year–anything that is not recyclable or reusable–can easily fit into a 16-ounce mason jar. 3.5 million tons of solid waste is generated each year, 10 times the amount produced a century ago. Given that the average American throws away 1,500 pounds a year, a mason jar containing a year’s worth is truly inspiring.  Zero-waste people would tell you that it’s easy once you get the hang of it [1]. You may ask, “But how do you clean up after using the toilet or wipe and disinfect surfaces without generating trash?” Zero-waste lifestyle can sound intimidating and enigmatic [2] in equal measure. Easily recognizable items and ingredients, however, make up the day-to-day of a zero waste life. Skincare is a good place to start. Coconut oil, rosehip oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, raw honey, shea butter, fine-grain salt, and cinnamon powder can be mix-matched in varying proportions to guarantee a glow on your skin. Coconut oil is not only a perfect makeup remover, but it can be mixed with other oils and whipped to make lotion. A facial cleaner can be replaced with a dollop of honey– with cinnamon powder and water added, voila, there’s an exfoliator. You may consider zero-waste skincare products on the market if home-made mixtures don’t work wonders. To address the burning question of the bathroom situation, there are three major options. The easiest way is to use 100% recycled toilet paper, which is arguably not completely zero-waste. Another rather familiar solution is to install the bidet. The all-in option? Reusable toilet cloths. They can be anything from worn-out T shirts, towels, or rags. This has proven a viable option to many who have taken on the onerous task of thoroughly cleaning their cloth after use.  Beyond fun tips and tricks, though, it is worth noting that the name “zero-waste” can set unreasonably high bars for what the lifestyle entails. Zero-waste in a pure sense is unattainable. We inevitably discharge bodily waste, and reusable toilet cloth will eventually rot somewhere; or think about all the non-visible waste and emissions we generate. This is not to say that going zero-waste is a bogus move–it’s quite the opposite. In the absence of no hard set rules or gatekeepers [3], what matters is the zero-waste mindset or the intention to be more environmentally conscious. Admittedly, not ordering takeout or carrying mason jars and steel straws everywhere to avoid disposable containers can be more than just a small inconvenience, especially if you work everyday. Instead of denying that your existence contributes more than “zero” to the planet, consider joining the less-waste movement.

쓰레기를 줄이려고 애쓰는 사람들이 늘고 있습니다. 그들이 일년에 배출하는 쓰레기의 양은 재사용이나 재활용이 가능한 것들을 제외하고나면 16온스짜리 병(메이슨 자)에 들어가는 정도입니다. 매년 쏟아져 나오는 350만 톤의 쓰레기는 1세기 전에 비해 10배가 넘는 수준입니다. 미국인의 일인당 평균 쓰레기 배출량이 1천 500파운드라는 점을 생각할 때 일년에 내놓는 쓰레기가 병 하나에 들어갈 정도라는 것은 정말로 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다.  쓰레기 없애기를 실천하고 있는 사람들은 일단 시작해서 궤도에 오르면 이것이 별로 어렵지 않은 일이라고 말합니다. “하지만 화장실을 사용하거나 식탁 위를 닦아내는 데 어떻게 쓰레기가 나오지 않을 수가 있습니까?” 이런 질문이 나올겁니다. 또한 쓰레기 없는 생활은 엄두가 안나거나 그만큼 신비하게 들리기도 합니다. 하지만 쓰레기 없는 생활은 쉽게 알아볼 수 있는 물건과 재료들을 이용해서 살면서도 가능합니다.  화장품부터 생각해봅시다. 코코넛 오일, 로즈힙 오일, 호호바 오일, 아몬드 오일, 꿀, 쉬아 버터, 고운 소금 그리고 계피가루 등을 서로 다양한 비율로 혼합하면 피부에 윤기를 주는 화장품을 만들 수 있습니다. 코코넛 오일은 화장을 지우는 데 좋을 뿐 아니라 다른 오일과 섞어서 거품을 내면 로션으로도 쓸 수 있습니다. 꿀을 세안제 대신에 사용할 수 있고, 또 계피가루와 물과 섞어 피부 각질 제거제로도 쓸 수 있습니다. 집에서 만들어 쓰는 제품이 효과가 없어 마음에 들지 않으면, 시장에도 쓰레기 무배출 용 스킨케어 제품들이 나와 있습니다.  정말 궁금해하실 화장실 문제에 대해 답을 하자면 다음의 세가지 방법이 가능합니다. 가장 쉬운 방법은 엄밀히 말하면 쓰레기 무배출이 아니긴 하지만 100퍼센트 재활용된 화장지를 사용하는 것입니다. 또다른 친숙한 방법은 비데를 설치하는 겁니다. 최고의 선택은? 화장지 대신 재사용이 가능한 천을 사용하는 겁니다. 낡은 티셔츠나 수건 혹은 천조각 같은 것을 사용하면 됩니다. 사용 후 이 천들을 꼼꼼히 깨끗하게 빨아야 하는 힘든 일을 기꺼이 감수하기로 한다면 이 방법도 해볼 만한 것으로 판명되었습니다.  그러나 재미있는 요령과 팁들을 넘어 “쓰레기 무배출”이라는 이름이 지나치게 높은 기대를 불러일으킨다는 점을 주목할 필요가 있습니다. 진정한 의미의 “쓰레기 무배출”은 불가능합니다. 인간들은 어쩔수없이 몸에서 분비물을 배출하고 재사용이 가능하던 화장실용 천들도 결국은 언젠가 버려져서 어디에선가 썩게 될 것입니다. 그뿐만 아니라 우리가 배출하는 눈에 보이지 않는 모든 쓰레기와 가스를 생각해보십시오. 그렇다고 현재 벌어지고 있는 쓰레기 무배출 운동이 속임수라고 말하는 것은 아닙니다. 오히려 그 정반대입니다. 정확히 정해진 규칙이나 감시자도 없는 상황에서 중요한 것은 쓰레기를 없애고자 하는 마음가짐과 환경문제에 대한 인식을 높이려는 의도입니다. 당연히도, 일회용품 사용을 없애기 위해 음식을 배달해서 먹지 않고 병이나 금속제 빨대를 휴대하고 다니는 것은 단지 생활의 불편함을 주는 것 이상의 것을 요구합니다. 특히나 여러분이 매일 일을 한다면 말입니다. 당신의 존재가 지구에 쓰레기를 내놓는다는 사실을 부정하지 말고 그 대신 쓰레기 줄이기 운동에 참여하는 것을 고려해 보십시오.
