My experience at a big law firm left me so emotionally drained that I have no motivation to do anything.

혹시 '명절증후군' 느껴보셨나요?

If you are emotionally drained [1] during the Seol (the Korean New Year) holidays, you are not alone. Traditionally, in the morning of Seollal, families carry out charye, an ancestral rite that involves liquor and seasonal foods, including tteokguk (rice cake soup), jeon (Korean pancake), rice cake, and fruits such as jujubes, persimmons, and pears. What those without first-hand Charye experience don’t know is that preparing for this ritual can take a physical and emotional toll on people, especially when they’ve traveled long distances to see their relatives. Charye food and large meals for a score of guests are prepared mostly by women who flip and grill in a patient crouch [2] over portable stoves on the floor. Laboring in uncomfortable postures all day long leads to soreness in the neck and back, alongside emotional side effects. This painful experience is often referred to as “holiday-sickness”. Holiday-sickness, in fact, broadly refers to the stress associated with Korean holidays. Even if you avoid cooking and cleaning responsibilities, you might have to deal with nosy, recalcitrant relatives directing uncomfortable questions at you. They might question why you’ve gained weight, why you aren’t married yet, or why you haven’t gotten into some school or some job. The primary activities during Seollal holidays, unfortunately, are defined by cooking, cleaning, and tolerating your relatives and in-laws. Especially for strained relationships, the Seol reunion can be a time when all hell breaks loose [3].  Holiday and sickness are two seemingly incongruent words, but their combination can manifest in varying symptoms from digestive problems, to insomnia, depression, and anger management issues. You may choose not to visit your relatives because you’re sick and sick of the holidays, but this decision doesn’t come easily for many people in Korea where familial obligations carry weight. For those who might prefer to avoid the holidays entirely, the best response might instead be to focus on the things you can control. You know that that person at the family reunion will annoy you or that you’ll have to cook and clean for hours. The choice to confront a rude relative is yours, and it might turn out to be easier than you think. Otherwise, don’t give their insensitive comments the power to disturb you. In terms of the onerous task of cooking and cleaning, consistent stretching may help your body mitigate the damage. After all, holidays are meant to be times of joy, warmth, and reunion. Make sure you take care of yourself.

설 연휴 동안 감정적으로 쇠진했다고 느낀다면 그건 당신뿐이 아닙니다. 전통에 따라 설날 아침이면 가족들이 모여 떡국, 전, 떡, 그리고 대추, 감, 배와 같은 과일을 포함한 각종 음식과 술을 놓고 차례를 지냅니다.  직접 차례를 지내본 경험이 없는 사람들은 차례를 준비하는 것이 신체적이나 정신적으로 커다란 부담이 될 수 있다는 것을 알지 못합니다. 특히나 이 행사를 위해 장시간 여행을 해야 할 때는 더욱 그렇습니다. 차례 음식과 손님들을 위해 대량의 음식을 준비하는 것은 대부분 여자들의 몫입니다. 여자들은 바닥에 놓인 휴대용 가스버너 앞에 참을성있게 쭈그리고 앉아 음식을 굽고 뒤집고 합니다. 하루종일 불편한 자세로 일하면 목과 등이 아프고 정신적 부작용도 동반되기 마련입니다. 이 고통스러운 경험은 종종 “명절증후군”이라고 불립니다.  사실 명절증후군은 한국의 명절과 연관된 전반적인 스트레스와 심리적 부담감을 포괄적으로 일컫습니다. 요리하고 치우는 일은 피할 수 있다고 해도 참견하기 좋아하고 고집센 친척들의 불편한 질문을 상대해야 할 수도 있습니다. 그들은 왜 살이 쪘는지, 왜 아직 결혼을 안하는지, 혹은 왜 어느 학교에 가지 못하고 왜 어느 곳에 취직을 못했는지 캐물을지 모릅니다. 설날 연휴의 주요 활동은 불행하게도 요리하고 청소하고 그리고 친척과 시댁 혹은 처가 식구들을 참아내는 것입니다. 특히 관계가 좋지 않은 가족이나 친척이 있다면 설날 모임은 그야말로 서로 언성을 높여 싸우는 아수라장이 될 수도 있습니다.  명절과 증후군은 겉보기에 서로 어울리지 않는 두 단어이지만 이 둘의 조합은 소화 관련 문제에서부터 불면증, 우울증, 그리고 분노 조절문제에 이르기까지 다양한 증상으로 나타날 수 있습니다. 실제로 몸이 아프고 명절이 지긋지긋해서 가족을 방문하지 않기로 할 수도 있지만, 가족으로서의 의무를 중요하게 여기는 한국의 많은 사람들에게 이 결정은 쉽지 않은게 현실입니다. 명절을 전적으로 피하고 싶은 사람들에게 가장 좋은 대책은 자신이 통제할 수 있는 부분들에 집중하는 것일지도 모릅니다. 가족 중 누군가가 당신의 신경을 건드릴 수 있다거나 몇 시간 동안 요리하고 설거지해야 한다는 것은 벌써 알고 있는 사실입니다. 무례한 친척에게 정면으로 부딪칠지는 당신이 선택할 문제이고 오히려 그렇게 하는 것이 생각보다 쉬울 수도 있습니다. 하지만 참기로 했다면 그들의 경우없는 말에 감정을 소모하지 마세요. 요리와 설거지와 같은 힘든 일들은 짬짬이 스트레칭을 하면서 하면  몸에 오는 부담을 줄일 수 있을겁니다. 결국 명절은 기쁨과 따뜻함 그리고 재회의 시간입니다. 그러니 당신 스스로를 잘 살피는 것 잊지 마세요.
