Take a moment to imagine a person you love who lives far away. Perhaps it’s an old friend from college who moved to a different city or a family member residing in a different country. Phone calls and text messages are nice for keeping in touch with them, but you probably feel a lack of in-person connectivity due to the limitations of geographic distance and 2D communication. Now, imagine in a few minutes from now you’re suddenly able to knock on their front door, give them a hug, and catch up over a cup of coffee. Except, there’s one catch-- that this entire interaction happens in a virtual reality known as “the metaverse.” If you’ve ever played The Sims, the metaverse concept similarly carves a path for you to live in your very own curated [1] world. You can meet, work, shop, play games, and interact with people in a revolutionized way, while simultaneously teleporting to wherever you’d like. Instead of commenting on your friend’s Facebook post, imagine a digital world where you can interact with each other in real-time through simulated face-to-face engagement. What is the metaverse?Humans have long joked about the prospect of living in a virtual world, as is often referenced in sci-fi movies and fantasy novels. But not many people believed this concept would ever be plausible. Today, technological innovation is enabling this futuristic idea to come to fruition… but what does the introduction and implementation of the metaverse mean for humanity as we know it? Neal Stephenson first coined the term “metaverse” in his 1992 novel Snow Crash. He defined it as a 3D world inhabited by virtual avatars of real people. The metaverse is a phenomenon linking together physical, augmented, and virtual reality in a shared online space, allowing humans to connect outside of their physical presence. By replacing the standard 2D internet that humans in today’s world have grown accustomed to, the metaverse offers an immersive 3D alternative.  The actual creation of the modern-day metaverse was inspired by the ever-expanding video game industry. Gamers have collectively spent over 9.7 billion hours playing on the popular gaming platform Roblox in just the first four months of 2021 alone. This is up over 98 percent from the same four-month period of 2020. In a time when everyone is encouraged to stay home due to the pandemic, it’s no surprise that people are turning towards new ways for safe entertainment. COVID-19 has shined light onto the fact that our physical world is finite and malleable. The metaverse, on the other hand, offers a way to build a world that has no limitations. How will the metaverse work?One of the primary goals of the metaverse is to establish a technology that will bring people together and deliver the clearest form of presence. This means creating a virtual world where anyone can access from anywhere in the world. You can design your own avatar, go shopping, and even have a job in this digital universe! The metaverse also promises a plethora of entertainment opportunities, like socializing with friends, playing games, or attending concerts. While the metaverse has not yet launched on a large scale, we can expect to see early stages of this technology rolling out within the next year. Companies are racing to be the first to successfully launch a metaverse platform accessible to the everyday person. Different companies will create their own engines—i.e., Minecraft, Facebook, etc, and these engines will connect in the greater scheme of the metaverse, theoretically allowing users to travel between these different digital platforms. Through the mainstreaming [2] of 5G technology, there’s now a near-seamless link between how humans can perceive the physical and digital worlds, making the metaverse an even faster and more realistic experience. In terms of people accessing the metaverse, the hardware is still being sorted out. When we think of virtual reality, our minds tend to jump to chunky headsets required for immersion. However, these standard headsets are being replaced by sleek “smart glasses.” Just last month, Facebook teamed up with Ray-Ban and launched their first series of smart glasses which will allow users to take photos, record videos, and answer phone calls from the ease of their prescription eyewear. Imagine simply putting on your glasses and immediately transporting into a whole different virtual world! This is a huge step towards mainstreaming digital reality, allowing access to a reimagined relationship between humans and technology.  ConclusionWhile there are still many unknowns about its functionality and effects, the metaverse is unquestionably going to revolutionize technological interconnectivity. Not only will the internet change, but markets, economies, cultures, and entire countries as we know them will alter upon implementing the metaverse. The possibilities are endless.

멀리 살고 있는 그리운 사람을 잠시 머리속에 떠올려보세요. 그 사람은 다른 도시로 이사간 대학 친구일 수도 있고 다른 나라에 살고 있는 가족일 수도 있습니다. 전화나 문자로 그들과 계속 연락은 하고 있지만 지리적 거리와 이차원적 소통방식으로 인해 직접적으로 연결되어 있지 않다고 느낄 것이 분명합니다. 이제 지금부터 몇 분 후에 당신이 불쑥 그 사람의 집에 가서 문을 두드리고 포옹하고 커피 한잔을 놓고 마주앉아 그동안 못한 얘기를 나눌 수 있다고 상상해보세요. 단지 한가지 알아야 할 것이 있다면, 이 만남은 모두 “메타버스”라고 알려진 가상현실에서 일어난다는 것입니다.  만약 “심스”라는 게임을 해본 적이 있다면 메타버스의 개념은 그와 유사하게 당신이 직접 만든 세상에 살 수 있는 길을 열어줍니다. 당신은 아주 혁신적인 방법으로 일하고 쇼핑하고 게임을 하고 사람들을 만나고 상호작용을 함과 동시에 당신이 원하는 곳으로 순간이동을 할 수 있습니다. 친구의 페이스북 포스트에 답을 다는 대신 시뮬레이션을 통해 직접 얼굴을 맞대고 실시간으로 서로 소통할 수 있는 디지털 세상을 상상해보세요.  메타버스란 무엇일까요?인간은 오랫동안 공상과학영화와 판타지소설에서나 자주 등장하는 것 같은 가상세계에 사는 미래에 대해 농담처럼 이야기해왔습니다. 하지만 많은 사람들이 이런 개념이 실현가능하리라고 믿지는 않았습니다. 오늘날의 기술적 혁신은 이런 미래주의적인 생각들이 현실적인 결실을 맺는 것을 가능케하고 있습니다. 하지만 이러한 메타버스의 도입과 실현이 현재 우리가 알고 있는 인류에게 어떤 의미를 가지는걸까요? 닐 스티븐슨은 1922년 그의 소설 “스노 크래시”에서 “메타버스”라는 말을 처음 사용했습니다. 그의 정의에 따르면 메타버스는 실제 사람들의 가상 아바타가 살고 있는 3차원의 세상입니다. 메타버스는 실제현실, 증강현실 그리고 가상현실을 하나의 공유된 온라인 공간에서 한데 연결시킴으로서, 사람들이 그들이 실재하지 않는 곳에서 서로 교류하는 것을 가능하게 해줍니다. 오늘날의 인간들이 친숙해진 2차원의 인터넷을 대체함으로써 메타버스는 몰입형 3차원의 세상을 제공합니다.  현대의 메타버스를 실제로 창조해내는 작업에 가장 큰 영감을 주고 있는 것은 끊임없이 영역을 확대해가는 비디오게임업계입니다. 게이머들은 2021년 첫 4개월 동안 자그마치 총 97억 시간을 인기높은 게임 플랫폼인 로블록스에서 보냈습니다. 이는 2020년 동기간에 비해 무려 98퍼센트가 증가한 것입니다. 팬데믹 때문에 모두 집에 머물도록 권장된 기간 동안 사람들이 안전하게 즐길 수 있는 새로운 오락거리를 모색한 것은 놀랄 일이 아닙니다. 코비드는 우리가 실제 살고 있는 이 세계는 한계가 있지만 우리의 의도에 맞게 수정할 만한 유연성이 있다는 사실을 상기시켜주었습니다. 반면 메타버스는 아무런 제약 없는 세상을 건설할 수 있는 방법을 제공합니다.  메타버스는 어떻게 작용할까요?메타버스의 주요 목적 중의 하나는 사람들이 한데 불러모으고 가장 분명한 형태의 실존감을 제공하는 기술을 확립하는 데 있습니다. 이것은 누구나가 세계 어디서나 접속할 수 있는 가상 세계를 만든다는 것을 의미합니다. 여러분은 여러분만의 아바타를 만들고 쇼핑을 하고 심지어 디지털 세계에서 직업을 가질 수도 있습니다! 메타버스는 또한 친구들과 만나고 게임을 하고 연주회에 참석하는 등 무수한 오락의 기회를 약속합니다. 메타버스가 아직 대규모로 시작되지 않았지만 내년 내로 그 초기 단계의 기술이 시장에 선보일 것으로 기대됩니다.  현재 일반인들이 접속할 수 있는 메타버스 플랫폼을 소개하는데 성공하는 첫 주자가 되려는 회사들 간의 경쟁은 치열합니다. 마인크래프트, 페이스북 등 서로 다른 회사들이 자기들의 엔진을 만들고 이 엔진들이 메타버스라는 더 거대한 체계적인 디자인 안에서 연결됨으로써 이론적으로 사용자들은 이러한 서로 다른 디지털 플랫폼 간을 여행할 수 있게 됩니다. 5G 기술의 본격적 도입으로 이미 물리적인 현실 세계와 디지털 세계는 인간이 둘 사이의 간극을 전혀 인식하지 못할 정도로 완벽하게 연결시키면서 메타버스를 더 빠르고 더 사실적인 경험으로 만들어줍니다.    메타버스에 접속하는 방법의 측면에서 보면, 하드웨어적인 문제는 아직 해결되지 못한 상황입니다. 가상현실이라 하면 우리는 흔히 몰입형 경험에 필요한 투박한 헤드셋을 떠올리기 쉽습니다. 하지만 이러한 종래의 헤드셋은 보다 가볍고 산뜻한 “스마트 안경”으로 대체될 것입니다. 바로 지난달 페이스북은 안경회사 레이반과 협력해서 최초의 스마트 안경 시리즈를 선보였습니다. 시력 보정을 위해 쓴 안경을 사용해서 사람들은 손쉽게 사진을 찍고 비디오를 녹화하고 전화를 받을 수 있게 될 것입니다. 단순히 안경을 씀으로써 순간적으로 완전히 다른 가상의 세계로 이동하는 걸 한번 상상해보세요! 이것은 디지털 속의 현실이 주류가 되는 시대를 향한 커다란 도약이며 인간과 기술 간의 새로운 관계를 여는 계기가 될 것입니다.  결론아직 그 기능이나 효과 면에서는 불확실한 것들이 많지만 메타버스가 기술적인 상호연결성을 혁신적으로 변모시킬 것이라는 것은 의심의 여지가 없습니다. 단지 인터넷이 변화하는 데에 그치는 것이 아니라 현재 우리가 알고 있는 시장, 경제, 문화 그리고 나라가 메타버스의 채택과 함께 달라질 것입니다. 그리고 앞으로 일어날 가능성들은 무궁무진합니다.
