The bosses that I’ve met during the past 20-plus years of my career can be roughly categorized as either micromanagers or absentee managers. It goes without saying that unethical, cruel managers exist. But intervention is required in those cases where decency and good faith are thrown out of the window—compliance monitoring or psychotherapy, perhaps, to get to the root of the problem. Here, I’d like to turn my focus to managers who act within reason and advise on what you, as an individual, can do.  Now, back to the difficult (but not too bad) bosses. Here are some common complaints about micromanagers: <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Why do I have to run everything by my boss? They are always disapproving anyways.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">When I ask for an opinion, they tell me to be more self-reliant, which doesn’t make sense because they are extremely controlling.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">My boss is so inconsistent … their preferences change every hour</li></ul> If you’re facing similar challenges, one reason could be a lack of understanding. In the absence of common ground regarding goals, priorities, and pace of work, any professional relationship suffers. And in an innocent attempt to engage you more, your boss might end up micromanaging you.   Thus, the first thing to do when you feel micromanaged is to ask questions! Ask your supervisor what their objectives are and what the timeline looks like. A caveat: do your homework before you ask for help since unhelpful comments will follow uninformed questions. Prepare your hypothetical answers to the questions you’d want to ask  so that you can be their sounding board [1]. After all, as a frontline worker, you might have insights to offer to your manager based on your hands-on experience. Your boss might also be unpredictable, but change is better than inaction, especially in this ever-evolving business environment. If you find your boss’ change of plan baffling or overwhelming, ask them why they made that decision and what it would mean for the team—not in an accusatory tone, but to find ways to understand each other better. On the other hand, absentee managers are antithetical [2] to micromanagers; but they can be equally frustrating. You may think:<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">My boss simply doesn’t care. I feel like I am left in the dark. </li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">More often than not, I find myself wasting time on less important issues because my boss never communicates.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">They turn a blind eye when things go awry. (Yup, that’s the worst part.)</li></ul> In this case, your boss likely lacks the focus, ability, or knowledge needed to provide constructive feedback on your work. Although they don’t mean any harm, things are bound to go wrong under their lax leadership. The problem is that you have to bear the burden. No matter why your boss is so disconnected, you have only one solution: take proactive steps because you are the only one responsible for your career. Find out what your boss discusses with their supervisor. Find out what’s happening outside your team and align yourself with the broader picture. You might not be very happy about all the extra steps you have to take to mitigate potential damage. But the more you try to get things under your control, the less frustrating your workplace will be. Looking back on my career, I have rarely been helped without helping myself. So take those extra steps to boost your performance. You’ll see yourself thrive both in and out of the workplace.

20년이 넘는 직장 생활을 통해 제가 겪어본 “어려운 상사”의 유형은 크게 마이크로매니저와 방임형 상사 둘로 나뉩니다.  물론 세상에는 인성적, 윤리적으로 문제가 있는 상사들도 있습니다. 하지만 이런 기본 예의나 신의가 사라져버린 경우에는 외부의 개입이 필요합니다. 문제의 근원을 해결하기 위해 컴플라이언스 모니터링이나 정신과 상담 같은 것들 말입니다. 오늘 여기서는 합리적으로 행동하는 상사와 일하는 경우에 초점을 두고, 한 개인으로서 당신이 할 수 있는 행동에 대한 팁을 나누고자 합니다.  이제 같이 일하기 어려운 (그러나 최악은 아닌) 상사 얘기로 다시 돌아가겠습니다. 마이크로매니저 유형의 상사는 대개 다음과 같은 불만을 일으킵니다.<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">내 보스는 왜 하나부터 열까지 다 허락을 받으라 할까? 어쨌든 항상 다 반대하면서 말야. </li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">내가 의견을 물어보면 담당자인 내가 알아서 하라고 말하지만, 그건 말도 안돼. 어차피 본인이 일일이 다 지시를 내리잖아?</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">내 상사는 너무 일관성이 없어서… 얘기하는 것이 매번 바뀌어.</li></ul> 당신이 이와 비슷한 상황에 처해 있다면 그 한가지 이유는 상호 이해 부족일 수 있습니다. 업무 목표, 우선순위, 추진 속도에 관해 합의된 기반이 없으면 어떤 업무 관계도 원활하게 유지되기 어렵습니다. 그리고 당신을 일에 더 관여시키려는 상사의 순수한 의도가 마이크로매니징이 되어버린 것일 수 있습니다.  그러니 지금 상사가 마이크로매니징을 하고 있다고 느껴지면 우선 당신이 해야 할 일이 있다면 질문을 하는 것입니다! 상사에게 그들의 목적과 일정이 무언지 물어보세요. 이때 주의할 점은, 도움을 청하기 전에 일단 필요한 것들을 잘 알아보라는 겁니다. 잘 모르는 채 질문을 하면 도움이 되지 않는 잔소리만 듣게 됩니다. 미팅에 임할 때는 항상 나올 만한 질문에 대해 가설적인 답변을 준비해서, 상사를 위한 믿을 만한 조언가가 되어보세요. 사실 어떤 사안에 대해 제일 잘 아는 것은 일선에서 직접 그 일을 하고 있는 담당자인 ‘나’일테니까 그것을 바탕으로 상사에게 의견을 제시할 수 있습니다.  여러분의 상사가 예측이 안되는 사람일 수 있지만 특히나 지금과 같이 끊임없이 변화하는 사업 환경을 생각하면 행동하지 않는 것보다는 변화가 훨씬 낫습니다. 만약 상사의 계획 변경이 황당하거나 부담스럽게 느껴진다면, 왜 그들이 그런 결정을 했는지, 그리고 그것이 팀 전체에 어떤 의미인지를 물어보세요. 비난하는 어조로 묻지 말고 서로를 더 잘 이해하는 방법을 찾기 위해서 말입니다.  반면 마이크로매니저의 반대 유형으로는 방임형 상사가 있습니다. 그들도 당신을 힘들게 하기는 마찬가지이고 당신은 이런 생각을 할 수 있습니다<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">내 상사는 아무 관심도 없다. 나 혼자 내버려진 느낌이야.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">내 상사는 나한테 제대로 의사를 전달해주지 않아서, 나는 중요하지 않은 일을 하느라 시간을 낭비하게 되는 경우가 많아.</li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">그러다 일이 잘못되면 모르는 척하고 도와주지 않지. (그렇죠. 이것이 제일 큰 문제입니다)</li></ul> 이런 상사는 당신의 업무에 건설적인 피드백을 제공할 만한 집중력이나 능력, 지식이 없을 가능성이 높습니다. 일부러 해를 끼치려는 것은 아니지만 그들의 태만한 리더십은 일을 그르칠 수밖에 없습니다. 문제는 이 때문에 바로 당신이 피해를 본다는 것입니다.  상사가 이렇게 방임을 하는 원인이 무엇이든 해결책은 하나밖에 없습니다. 여러분의 커리어는 오직 여러분이 책임져야 하는 것이기 때문에 사전에 적극적인 조치를 취해야 합니다. 여러분의 상사가 자기의 상사와 무슨 얘기를 하는지 알아보세요. 다른 옆팀에서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 알아보고 더 큰 전반적인 흐름에 맞춰보세요. 아직 일어나지도 않은 잠재적인 피해를 미리 해결하려고 이렇게까지 해야 하나 하는 생각을 하며 화가 날 수도 있습니다. 하지만 당신이 통제할 수 있는 부분들이 많아질수록 직장에서 받는 좌절감은 반감합니다. 제 커리어를 돌아보면 제가 제 스스로를 돕지 않고 남이 알아서 해결해준 일은 거의 없었습니다. 그러니 여러분의 실적 향상을 위해서는 여러분이 좀 더 뛰는 수밖에 없습니다. 그러면 여러분은 직장에서나 직장 밖에서나 성공할 수 있을겁니다.
