“Do they like me?” This is an acute question whose variation is, “Will they think that I’m weird?” Depending on the answer, we may take steps to deepen a friendship or withdraw to save face. The execution ought to be swift, decisive, and <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">preemptive [1], for failure to pick up small hints of potential rejection can lead to humiliation—the ultimate disgrace to the ego. To avoid real rejections, we <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">conjure [2] imaginary rejections, and skittishly walk away before making any meaningful efforts to build a relationship, thinking, “They don’t want me anyways… we can’t be friends.” It is a low-risk strategy that brings us comfort, but also endless worry about what people think of us.  Out of longing for certainty, we assume that people either like us or hate us, and that they make an <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">a priori [3] decision about who we are that is independent of what we do. It’s incredible how the human mind slights what is already known from experience: we neither hate nor like people most of the time. Our feelings towards them are vague and complicated, and are swayed by how they treat us. The good news is, contrary to our intuitive conviction, we have more agency over what others make of us. It is unlikely to earn contempt or rejection as a result of showing warmth and encouragement. When two people fail to connect because of their fear of rejection, and yet they don’t try to reverse the situation because of low self-esteem, there’s nothing sadder than that.  Thus, the key is to have the strength to show people that you like them before you know whether they like you. We should focus on what we can do rather than making <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">futile [4] attempts at guessing how they might perceive us. And if this is reminiscent of the ubiquitous lesson to focus on what you can control, it’s because it is. Like you cannot draw heavy clouds over the sky on command, you cannot decide what others think of you. For sediment to form, countless particles pool, gather, and compress—grains of events compress over time to form an individual's history and frame of mind. But again, despite this similitude, compared to natural phenomena, we have more agency over relationships. Show them that you care, without caring too much.
