Historically, the American mattress industry has been heavily monopolized by a small number of companies, making market disruption particularly difficult. Considering that most Americans purchase a mattress about every eight years, almost 35 million are sold annually, making mattresses a big business. Traditionally, these were sold at stores and distribution centers where consumers had the opportunity to try a variety of styles and firmnesses.  Yet Casper, founded in 2014, has led the charge to disrupt this traditional sales model. As opposed to the several hundred models sold by Sealy alone, Casper offers a narrow lineup which is designed to be appealing to all consumers. Additionally, the company has <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">forgone [2] their competitors’ sprawling distribution network, opting instead for a primarily online sales model with limited pop-up centers in major markets like New York City. Casper does not have a low-end option, instead offering competitive financing deals on their solitary mattress product. Part of the pitch, the company argues, is that they make just one product with such <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">exacting [3] quality that it will be enough to sustain the business in the future.  Key to Casper’s mattress-by-mail system is their use of boxes in delivery. While traditional mattresses come in their standard shapes wrapped in plastic, the Casper is in a small box that, while heavy, can be easily transported in and out of homes. Apartment dwellers no longer have to struggle to carry <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">unwieldy [4] items up narrow stairwells, and deliveries can be made by post as opposed to a multi-member specialist team. Casper notes that this innovative packaging is also far more environmentally efficient than standard plastic wrap, with a far greater percentage of recyclable materials.  Though there are many benefits to the mattress itself, Casper’s unique marketing strategy has been an important part of its success. In one effort, Casper blanketed subways in major North American cities like New York, Chicago, and Toronto with riddles transit riders could solve during their commute. In another campaign, Casper has sponsored hundreds of different podcasts, offering <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">enticing [5] discounts to those who discover the company through word of mouth.  Though there are many benefits to the unique approach taken by Casper, the company has earned its fair share of copycats. Startups like Endy and Purple have begun using boxed packaging and reducing their offerings, while legacy companies such as Sealy have introduced direct competitors to the Casper mattress. Though Casper has enjoyed a massive boom in popularity over recent years, this influx of competition will be the greatest challenge the company has faced yet. It remains to be seen if these unique mattresses are a durable trend or passing fad.
