In Tesla’s leaked “Anti-Handbook Handbook,” the company addresses its new employees in a bold and informal tone, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">proclaiming [1] that only the most ambitious are welcomed. The emphasis placed on efficiency, efficacy, and diligence captures founder Elon Musk’s philosophy, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">codifying [2] his mind into four succinct pages. The anti-handbook, in fact, is not meant to be a handbook (you would have guessed from the title). It does not instruct employees on policies and rules because, in the company’s view, they only “tell you where the bottom is.” Throughout the course of the handbook, the reader is encouraged to use their own judgment to do the “right thing” instead of relying on formal policies.  Underlying the “Communication” section, for example, is the idea that corporate hierarchy should not prevent information sharing. The first sentence reads: “Anyone at Tesla can and should email/talk to anyone else according to what they think is the fastest way to solve a problem for the benefit of the whole company.” It is also made clear that “anyone” includes one’s “manager,” “manager’s manager,” “a VP,” and the founder Elon Musk himself.  Tesla’s stance against rules and policies reveals its stance against <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stifling [3] bureaucracy. Anyone who’s familiar with work in a large organization is well-aware that change can be slow to come by. Factors that contribute to the pace of change include: a lack of transparency, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stratification [4] of decision-makers, and restrictions that serve some purpose but also increase delays on simpler matters.  Creating levels of buffers within companies may ensure that each decision is given the appropriate consideration and oversight. At the same time, though, some have noted that the hierarchical structure emphasized in larger and more bureaucratic groups can negatively impact creativity and achievement. An “Anti-Handbook Handbook” certainly won’t single-handedly solve the issue of bureaucracy within a multinational company, but it is an interesting place to start. In encouraging employees to ignore traditional chains of command in favor of direct communication, Tesla opts for a freer flow of information. And on the topic of meetings, Elon Musk has noted that they are the “blight of big companies.” In an email to staffers, he encourages them to “walk out” or “drop off,” “as soon as it is obvious you aren’t adding value.” After all, “it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time.”
