Are Young Investors Reckless?

With the short squeeze of GameStop in early 2021 bringing the role of amateur and retail investors <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">into the limelight [1], a new yet unsupported hypothesis has emerged: Younger investors are more reckless and thrill-seeking. However, a study by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission revealed that younger people tend to invest for “ordinary” reasons as well, for a second stream of income or financial independence, just like older generations. While it’s true that younger investors tend to invest in more liquid assets, whereas older generations might invest in real estate, this trend is explained by Gen Zers’ limited capital. To invest, they use apps like Robinhood, one example of an online investment platform that has simplified (and perhaps gamified) the buying and selling of stocks. By offering commission-free trades, the app appealed to younger investors with limited capital by reversing the traditional practice in brokerage firms. Other generations have benefitted from Robinhood’s rise to fame, as bigger platforms like Charles Schwab and Vanguard followed Robinhood’s example and began offering commission-free trading as well. Beyond the impacts of commission-free trading, new studies have also suggested that the average Gen Z’er is <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stashing [2] away a bit more income for retirement as compared to older generations. Specifically, Gen Z workers are <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">putting away [3] about 14 percent of their income, whereas older generations put away an average of 12 percent. Explanations for this differ, although growing up during the 2007 to 2009 global economic downturn is a commonly-cited reason.  As shapers of an era of social media, Gen Z workers are also more likely to openly and publicly discuss their salaries with their peers. The popularity of public forums and social media subreddit r/WallStreetBets indicates that this generation of investors is more open to being transparent with each other about their trades as compared to generations prior.  By and large, social media is transforming the younger generation and the way they earn and invest their money. But to prove or disprove that this age group is reckless, a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">preponderance [4] of evidence must first be met.
