If you didn’t have your own stuffed animal growing up, you’ve no doubt seen people with stuffed animals— particularly children, carrying them around, talking to them, even keeping them at the foot of their bed. Stuffed animals come in various shapes and sizes, but the most common occurrence is probably that of the teddy bear, a stuffed, bear-like animal with arms that’s perfectly huggable. But have you ever wondered why stuffed animals are such a big part of kids’ and even adult lives? As it turns out, there’s a bit of science to how we’ve come to adore these adorable little <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">fluffy [1] creatures.  In the late 1950s, Harry Harlow, an American psychologist, conducted a series of controversial experiments on the nature of attachment, using rhesus monkeys as subjects. These monkeys were separated from their mothers at birth, and eventually provided with a “wire” and “cloth” mother; their names give a good idea of their construction. Harlow found that, when frightened, the infant monkeys would turn to the cloth mother for comfort, grabbing onto her and hugging her. Moreover, even when the experiment design was set such that the wire mother was the only source of food, the infants still preferred the “cloth” mother, meaning that there was something about the cloth that comforted the infants in a way that wire couldn’t. A 2014 study of childrens’ attachment to objects found that of those attached to inanimate objects, only 7% were attached to a “hard” object, like an action figure or plastic toy. The remaining 93% were attached to security blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals of some sort. Beyond the allure of softness, though, teddy bears also bring people a sense of security, of comfort, and of relief from loneliness. One of the key reasons that adults self-report keeping stuffed animals around is loneliness.  Even before COVID-19, rates of reported loneliness had grown, especially among younger generations. No doubt, technology plays a role in these reports, the paradox of being constantly connected somehow has left a generation feeling more alone than ever. Although the solution to loneliness is a lot more than soft and fluffy animals, they are one way that people have learned to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">cope [3].
