Life as a Student in Australia

Have you ever wondered what other people and students do in a variety of countries all around the world? Today, we are going to look at Australia compared to the Republic of Korea. There are many differences between life in Australia and Korea as evidenced by the academic situations, restaurant scenes, and leisure activities which are popular in each country. While Koreans are in a hurry, Aussies are relaxed and have a calming life. Let’s take a look at some of these differences below. If you asked 100 Korean students in a normal public school, ‘where do you spend most of your time outside of your home,’ they would be very likely to answer ‘after school programs,’ which we typically refer to as an ‘academy’ in Konglish. Before I moved to Australia, I was one of those students, and it caused me a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">decent [1] amount of stress. In Australia, the after school life is a little different from Korea. I still do have a couple of academies but it's mostly shorter than I was <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">accustomed [2] to. Additionally, the teachers who teach us are significantly younger than teachers in Korea on average. Studying is very important, but sometimes it's better to just relax for one day, which many Australians understand. I think it is too much to spend a lot of time on an afternoon activity which I am pretty sure would give you a massive amount of stress.  When we talk about Australia, we simply can’t ignore that it was colonized by the United Kingdom. In my opinion, British cuisine is quite bland and unseasoned. I personally believe Korean foods are more <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">distinct [3] than Australian ones, with the exception of vegemite. However, Australia has better tasting seafood as its climate is simply more diverse and habitable for fish compared to other countries. Australia’s food is mostly generic, with the most common example of a regional cuisine being vegemite as I talked about earlier, but many people differ in their preferences. One particularly shocking food for me was Kangaroo meat, which tastes surprisingly plain, like a less tender beef.  Then what are the differences in leisure activities? Korea is a peninsula and Australia is technically both a continent larger than Greenland yet also essentially an island. Both countries enjoy water activities quite a lot. In Korea, people mainly like to swim in the ocean and in Australia people like to surf. My school went on a surfing excursion earlier this year. I think that Koreans could enjoy their natural resources more if they tried surfing and other activities similarly to Australians. Building sand castles is also one of the most common activities in Korea. In contrast to that, I rarely see sand castles in Australia. Constructing and swimming in the wide open ocean is fun but it is also nice to enjoy extreme water sports with nature.  Looking and learning about diversified cultures all around the world is very important for those of you who have thought of studying abroad and for those who haven't really thought about it yet. Learning and browsing various cultures around the world is fun and enjoyable. Each part of the world has its own cultures, cuisines, and more to unlock, so why not get out and experience it?

<span style="12pt; font-family: Nanum Myeongjo, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">전 세계 다양한 나라에 사는 사람들과 학생들은 어떻게 살고 있는지 궁금한 적이 있나요? 오늘은 한국과 비교해서 호주에 대해 알아보겠습니다. 호주와 한국의 생활은 공부하는 환경, 레스토랑에서 맞닥뜨리는 장면, 각 나라에서 인기 있는 여가 활동에서 볼 수 있듯이 서로 많은 차이를 보입니다. 한국인들은 빨리빨리 서두르지만 호주인들은 여유롭고 차분한 삶을 삽니다. 아래에서 이런 몇 가지 차이점을 더 살펴보겠습니다. <span style="12pt; font-family: Nanum Myeongjo, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">만약 한국에서 공부하는 100명의 학생들에게 “집 밖에서 대부분의 시간을 보내는 곳이 어딘가요?”라고 묻는다면, 그들은 보통 콩글리쉬로 '학원'이라고 부르는 '방과 후 프로그램'이라 대답할 가능성이 높습니다. 호주로 이사 오기 전의 저도 그런 학생들 중 한 명이었고, 그 상황은 저에게 상당한 스트레스였습니다. 호주의 방과 후 라이프는 한국과 조금 다릅니다. 저도 아직 몇 군데의 학원을 다니기는 하지만, 제가 익숙했던 것보다 훨씬 짧은 시간을 학원에서 보냅니다. 그리고 우리를 가르치는 튜터들은 평균적으로 한국의 학원 선생님들보다 훨씬 나이가 어린 분들입니다. 공부가 매우 중요하긴 하지만 가끔은 하루 정도 휴식을 취하는 것이 더 나을 때가 있는데, 많은 호주인들은 이것이 무엇인지 이해합니다. 저는 확실히 엄청난 스트레스를 주는 방과 후 (학원) 활동을 하며 많은 시간을 보내는 것은, 그냥 너무한 것이라고 생각합니다. <span style="12pt; font-family: Nanum Myeongjo, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">호주에 대해 이야기할 때 이 나라가 영국의 식민지였다는 것을 빼놓을 수 없습니다. 제 생각에 영국 요리는 특징도 별로 없고 맛도 없습니다. 저는 개인적으로 한국 음식이 호주 음식보다 더 특징이 명확하다고 생각합니다. 베지마이트(빵에 발라먹는 스프레드)는 예외이지만 말입니다. 하지만 호주는 다른 나라에 비해 기후가 더 다양하고, 물고기들이 살기 아주 적합하기 때문에 더 맛있는 해산물 요리를 맛볼 수 있습니다. 호주의 음식은 대부분 특징이 없으며, 앞서 말한 것처럼 이 지역 요리의 가장 일반적인 예는 베지마이트이지만, 사람들이 선호하는 음식은 다양합니다. 제가 먹어봤던 특히 충격적인 음식은 캥거루 고기였는데, 놀라울 정도로 평범했습니다. 좀 덜 부드러운 쇠고기같은 맛이었거든요.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Nanum Myeongjo, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">그렇다면 여가 활동의 차이점은 무엇일까요? 한국은 반도이고 호주는 엄밀히 말하면 그린란드보다 더 큰 대륙이지만 본질적으로 섬이기도 합니다. 두 나라 모두 물에서 하는 활동이 꽤 인기가 있습니다. 한국인들은 바다에서 주로 수영하는 것을 좋아하고 호주인들은 서핑을 많이 즐깁니다. 제가 다니는 학교는 올해 초에 서핑 소풍을 갔었습니다. 한국인들도 호주인들처럼 서핑 등의 활동을 더 해본다면 자연을 더 잘 활용할 수 있을 것입니다. 한국에서는 모래성을 쌓는 것도 가장 흔한 바닷가 놀이 중 하나입니다. 반면에 호주에서는 모래성 쌓는 것은 거의 볼 수 없었습니다. 모래로 뭔가를 만들고 넓은 바다에서 수영하는 것은 재미있지만, 자연 속에서 익스트림 수상 스포츠를 즐기는 것도 해볼만한 일입니다.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Nanum Myeongjo, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">전 세계의 다양한 문화를 보고 배우는 것은 유학을 생각해 본 사람들, 또 아직은 유학에 대해 생각해 본 적이 없는 사람들에게도 매우 중요합니다. 세계의 다양한 문화를 배우고 탐색하는 것은 재미있고 즐겁습니다. 세계 각 지역은 그들만의 문화, 요리를 가지고 있고, 이보다 더 많은 것들을 알려줄 수 있으니, 한번 떠나서 그것들을 직접 경험해 보시면 어떨까요?<span style="12pt; font-family: Nanum Myeongjo, serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">
