Each day, more employees return to the office either full-time or in a hybrid format, leaving fully remote workers behind. While workplaces have the technical resources to accommodate in-person and remote workers, many lack effective tools to make up for the human biases that impact employee-employer relationships, especially proximity bias. <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Proximity bias, or the tendency for bosses to treat more favorably those employees who are physically closest to them, has become a source of serious concern for many remote and hybrid employees. Those working from home, aside from obviously not seeing their bosses and coworkers more, are unable to participate in <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">impromptu [1]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> meetings and conversations that deepen relationships and further workplace projects. Indeed, many online workers fear that their lack of face time with colleagues and managers limits their access to new opportunities since they cannot be reached as easily as someone sitting a few desks away. <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">During the height of the pandemic, virtually everyone worked from home, meaning that all employees were <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">on equal<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">footing [3]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">. Communication was happening through specific channels, like Zoom or email. Now, bosses communicate with their employees in a variety of ways, and it’s easier for bosses to communicate with those who are physically closest. Remote workers are left feeling more isolated and left out.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Luckily, there are potential remedies to proximity bias in hybrid workplaces. First, bosses must make clear that regardless of their location, all employees contribute critically to projects, and work could not be finished without the efforts of all types of employees. Also, by increasing the number of low-stakes, and one-on-one meetings with remote workers, bosses can build relationships and cultivate an environment where communication is casual and easy, but also meaningful. <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">It seems unlikely that all workers will one day report to the office as they did before the pandemic. So, we must be careful not to let our unconscious biases affect how and to whom we communicate. Establishing recurring and accessible channels of two-way communication with remote employees can help bosses reduce their proximity bias while increasing employees’ sense of community and collaboration.
