Yesterday, the Austine Daily reported the discovery of a trove of treasure on the ocean floor.

The whistleblower disclosed a trove of internal documents to expose the exploitative labor management of the company. 

As soon as the initial plan went astray, we knew that we’d have to terminate the project. 

They used a clever strategy to argue that rebelling students had been led astray by misinformation and disinformation and that, thus, the student demonstration had little bearing on social justice.

A Never-ending Drive to Explore

우주 속으로

It’s in our blood to thoroughly and courageously explore this world we call home. Since the dawn of humanity, we have never stopped learning, which has left us with proof of inquiry. For one, we have this body of knowledge we’ve accumulated, not to mention the troves [1] of tools for examination-- from bare hands to shaped rocks to supercomputers.  So often we look back in disbelief of what people in the past were willing to believe. This hindsight came through many scientific breakthroughs. The graph of progress is ugly, marked with peaks and trenches. But each win has been a reminder that it was worth it, after all. When the Apollo 17 crew took the image of Earth in 1972, the bird’s-eye view of the planet put humanity into perspective.  If what we can call knowledge began at a single point, we are now far away from that point. The Greeks would have never, in their wildest imaginations, predicted that an earthbound species would one day launch a rocket piercing the heavens. But we did. Then, what we now think is impossible may (if things go well) one day happen.  To make the impossible possible, people continue to push boundaries. It is not like that effort can reach omniscience or hit the walls of space. In the 20th century, people started launching satellites and spacecraft. But there is much more to be known about space. To date, no spacecraft has escaped the neighborhood of the solar system, and a galactic empire remains a fictitious idea. However, efforts to explore the outer reaches of space have gone far.   In 2021, NASA’s Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, plow through space as the first man-made objects to fly interstellar space. This is the area outside the reach of stellar winds, which describe the stream of energy that glowing stars emit. If you put your hand close to a candle, you’ll feel a heat bubble around the flame. As you withdraw your hand, you feel the air gradually cool. Think of the star as a glowing candle. The stellar wind, then, forms a bubble around the star, only to diminish in its influence.   The Voyagers are traveling beyond the influence of the solar wind: the Sun’s ‘stellar’ wind. Having left Earth in 1977, the two spacecraft carry vintage instruments that are estimated to work until 2025. For the time being, they are sending home valuable information about the uncharted territory.  Picture the Voyagers astray [2] in the dark, cold space, which in fact marks a huge victory in astronomy. The vastness of our galaxy is so unfathomable that two objects’ reaching points in nothingness means something. Space is replete with mystery, and human progress is negligible on astronomical scales. Will a day come when we launch a flyby mission to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky?

우리가 집이라 부르는 이 세계를 구석구석 용감하게 탐험하는 것은 인간의 본능입니다. 인류의 역사 초기부터 우리는 끊임없이 배움을 추구했고 그것은 우리에게 많은 연구조사의 증거물을 남겨주었습니다. 예를 들자면, 우리는 그동안 축적해온 방대한 양의 지식과 인간이 실험에 사용한 각종 도구(맨손에서 석기 그리고 슈퍼컴퓨터에 이르기까지)를 가지고 있습니다.  가끔 과거에 사람들이 당연히 사실이라고 믿었던 것을 돌아보면 어이가 없을 때가 있습니다. 획기적인 과학의 발전은 과거의 그릇된 믿음을 바로잡도록 해주었습니다. 인간의 진보를 나타낸 그래프를 보면 삐죽삐죽 높낮이가 심한 모양을 하고 있습니다. 하지만 결국 인간이 이뤄낸 모든 승리는 그 값어치를 다시 한번 우리에게 일깨워줍니다. 1972년 아폴로17호의 승무원들이 지구 사진을 찍었을 때, 멀리서 한눈에 바라본 그 지구의 모습은 인류에게 새로운 시각을 가져다주었습니다.  우리가 현재 지식이라고 부르는 것이 어느 한 시점에 시작되었다고 가정하면 우리는 현재 그 지점에서 아주 멀리 있습니다. 고대 그리스인들은 지구상의 존재가 어느 날 하늘을 뚫고 올라갈 로켓을 발사할 거라고는 꿈에도 생각지 못했을 겁니다. 그러나 우리는 그렇게 했습니다. 그리고 현재 우리가 불가능이라고 생각하는 것이 (모든 것이 잘 풀린다면) 언젠가 실현될지도 모릅니다.  불가능을 가능하게 만들기 위해 사람들은 끊임없이 도전합니다. 우리가 이런 노력으로 모든 것의 답을 얻었거나 우주의 끝까지 도달했다는 얘기는 아닙니다. 20세기에 인간은 위성과 우주선을 발사하기 시작했지만 우주는 여전히 미지의 세계입니다. 오늘날까지도 우주선은 태양계 언저리를 벗어나지 못하고 있고 은하계의 왕국은 아직 소설 속에나 있을 법한 얘기입니다. 하지만 보다 먼 우주를 탐험하고자 하는 노력은 이미 성과를 거두고 있습니다.  2021년 미국 우주항공국(NASA)의 보이저 1호와 2호는 인간이 만든 우주선으로는 처음으로 항성 간의 우주 공간 인터스텔라를 비행했습니다. 그 지역은 빛을 발하는 별들이 방출하는 에너지의 흐름이라고 할 수 있는 항성풍이 미치는 범위를 벗어난 곳입니다. 여러분이 촛불 가까이에 손을 가져가면 불꽃 주위에 열을 발하는 둥근 영역이 느껴질 것입니다. 그리고 촛불로부터 손을 멀리 움직이면 점차 공기가 차가워지는 것을 느낍니다. 별을 빛을 발하는 이 촛불이라고 생각해 보세요. 항성풍은 그 별 주위로 둥근 지역을 형성하고 별에서 멀어질수록 그 영향력은 줄어듭니다.  보이저 우주선들은 ‘태양풍’, 즉 태양의 에너지가 미치는 영향권을 넘어 여행하고 있습니다. 1977년 지구를 떠난 후 이 두 우주선은 2025년까지 작동할 것으로 추정되는 이제는 빈티지가 된 기구들을 싣고 있습니다. 당분간 그 우주선들은 미지의 영역에 대한 중대한 정보들을 계속 지구로 보내올 것입니다.  어둡고 추운 우주를 떠돌고 있는 우주선 보이저를 머릿속에 그려보세요. 그것은 천문학에 있어서 인간이 이룬 실로 놀라운 승리입니다. 은하계의 방대함은 한도 끝도 없기 때문에, 그 무한함 속에서 이 두 물체가 도달하는 지점은 중요한 의미를 지닙니다. 우주는 신비로 가득 차 있고 인간의 진보는 천체의 규모에 비하면 아주 보잘것없습니다. 과연 인간이 밤하늘에서 가장 밝게 빛나는 별, 시리우스로 가는 우주선을 발사할 날이 올까요?
