Sunday 4pm, beneath colorful crêperie awnings [1], happy chatter blends into the noise of clanging glass cups and metal utensils. People, seated at shoulder-width round tables, slice thin sheets of crêpes and sip espressos. They rejoice in each other’s company as the limestone facade of nearby buildings glitter in the sun. This is a typical scene during le goûter, or the French tea time—ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Paris.  Each place has a word that captures its mood. Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love, famously gave New York the word ACHIEVE and Los Angeles the word SUCCESS. It is in Paris, the capital of France and art, where one will catch a whiff of ELEGANCE in the air.  Paris is the home for more than 2 million people and a city bustling with museums and galleries. It is also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-visited-cities-around-the-world-ranked-2019-9#2-paris-191-million-18" style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:underline;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;text-decoration-skip-ink:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">one of the most visited cities</a> on Earth, having attracted more than 19 million tourists in 2019. Beyond iconic landmarks such as the Notre-Dame cathedral and Eiffel Tower, the French capital is well known for its luxury boutiques and cafe culture. To quote my friend, a French native, “There are so many things to see in Paris. It’d take my entire life.” The best way to experience life in this city is to wander around. As you stroll along the boulevards crisscrossing the cityscape, you’ll encounter breathtaking sites and storefronts. But towering all that, cream-colored Haussmann apartment buildings are the most characteristic feature of Paris.  Georges-Eugène Haussmann was a public figure chosen by Emperor Napoleon III to renovate the capital. Named after Haussmann, flats built during and after his time are identified throughout Paris. Haussmann buildings are usually three or four storeys high and adorned with freestone [2] facades. Tall and narrow windows are lined along the floors and guarded with decorative iron railings. Skinny chimneys poke out from rooftops, forming a contrast to the bulky buildings below.  The appearance of Paris harbors elegance. The architecture and art is marked by attention to detail. Everything, including cars and buildings, is petit but sophisticated compared to what we see in other countries (especially in America). No empty space is left idling– every corner of the streets are decorated with flowers. Trees lining the avenues are trimmed into cubes, and people still use le ticket de métro, the single-use paper ticket for Paris public transit.  In Paris, there is no tolerance for practical but “ugly” objects. Subdued natural beauty is much appreciated, while a flaunty and flashy display would invite arched eyebrows. But words can only describe Paris so much. If you get a chance, visit the capital of France. Even without plans, you can start wandering around for hours, and you’ll find yourself bedazzled by what you encounter. Renowned museums are great, but don’t forget to explore the nooks and crannies of the 20 arrondissements.

일요일 오후 4시 크레페 가게의 화려한 차양 아래로 즐겁게 대화를 나누는 소리가 유리컵과 금속 식기들이 부딪쳐 울리는 소리와 뒤섞입니다. 사람들은 어깨 너비의 작고 둥근 테이블에 앉아 얇은 크레페를 자르고 에스프레소 커피를 마십니다. 가까이 석회암으로 지어진 건물들의 정면이 햇빛을 받아 반짝이는 가운데 사람들은 서로 함께하는 시간을 즐기고 있습니다. 이것은 프랑스식 티 타임(르 구테) 동안 볼 수 있는 전형적인 장면입니다. 신사 숙녀 여러분, 파리에 오신 것을 환영합니다! 많은 장소는 그곳만의 분위기를 담아내는 단어를 가지고 있습니다. “먹고 기도하고 사랑하라”의 작가인 엘리자베스 길버트는 뉴욕에 “성취”라는 단어를, 로스앤젤레스에는 “성공”이라는 단어를 붙인 것으로 유명합니다. 프랑스의 수도이자 예술의 도시인 파리에서는 공기 중에서 “우아함”의 냄새를 맡을 수 있습니다. 파리는 200만 명이 넘는 사람들이 살고 있고 박물관과 화랑으로 북적대는 도시입니다. 또한 지구상에서 가장 많은 사람들이 방문하는 도시 중 하나로, 2019년에는 1천 9백만이 넘는 관광객을 끌어들였습니다. 노트르담대성당과 에펠탑과 같은 상징적인 기념물 이외에도, 파리는 고급 상점들과 카페 문화로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 프랑스에서 태어난 제 친구는 “파리에는 볼 것이 정말 많아. 다 보려면 평생이 걸릴 거야” 하고 말합니다.  이 도시의 생활을 경험해보는 최상의 방법은 여기저기 돌아다니는 것입니다. 도시 전역에 이리저리 교차하는 도로를 따라 거닐다보면 숨막힐 듯이 아름다운 장소와 상점 모습들과 마주치게 될겁니다. 그러나 그중 가장 놀라운 것은 오스만 시기에 지어진 크림빛 아파트 건물들인데, 그것은 파리의 가장 두드러진 특징입니다. 조르주 외젠 오스만은 나폴레옹 3세가 수도를 개조하기 위해 선택한 인물이었습니다. 그가 살던 시대와 그 이후에 지어진 아파트들은 그의 이름을 따라 오스만이라 붙여졌고 파리의 어디에서든 눈에 띕니다. 오스만 건물들은 보통 3-4층 높이로 건물 앞면은 석회암 같이 부드러운 돌로 장식되어 있습니다. 층을 따라 나열되어 있는 높고 폭이 좁은 창문들은 장식용 철창으로 막혀 있습니다. 가는 굴뚝이 지붕 꼭대기 위로 삐죽 솟아 있어서 아래의 덩치 큰 건물과 대조를 이룹니다. 파리의 외양은 우아함을 지니고 있습니다. 건축과 예술의 특징은 세세한 것에 주목하는 데 있습니다. 자동차와 건물들을 포함 모든 것이 작지만 정교합니다. 이는 다른 나라들(특히 미국)에서 볼 수 있는 것과 대조적입니다. 어느 빈 공간도 그냥 내버려두지 않아서 거리의 구석구석이 모두 꽃으로 장식되어 있습니다. 큰 대로에 늘어선 나무들은 정육면체 모양으로 손질되어 있고 사람들은 파리의 지하철을 이용하기 위해 여전히 일회용  종이 티켓인 메트로티켓을 사용합니다. 파리에서는 실용적이더라도 “보기 흉한” 것은 용납되지 않습니다. 은은한 자연미가 훨씬 높이 평가받는 반면 요란하고 현란하게 과시하는 것에는 눈살을 찌푸립니다. 하지만 말로는 파리를 다 설명할 수 없습니다. 만약 기회가 된다면 프랑스의 수도를 방문해보세요. 아무 계획이 없더라도 그냥 몇 시간이고 여기저기 돌아다니는 걸로 시작하면 됩니다. 그러면 당신은 눈앞에 나타나는 것들에 현혹될 것입니다. 유명한 박물관도 좋지만, 20개 구의 구석구석을 탐험해보는 것을 잊지 마십시오.
