Many Koreans know that Hallyu films have <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">taken America by storm [1]. Yet many are unfamiliar with the popularity of Korean food, especially on social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram. Korean and Korean-American chefs have taken advantage of recent interest in Asian culture to share their favorite home-cooked meals. In today’s article, we will discuss three of these influencers, and the unique styles that helped them become famous.  One of the most famous Korean-American cooks is Kim Kwang-Sook, better known by her username Maangchi, or “hammer.” Like many other influencers, Maangchi did not begin as a chef. Instead, Maangchi was a divorced housewife who spent her hours after work playing the popular computer game City of Heroes. While living in New York, Maangchi loved connecting with other Korean-Americans through the game and discussing traditional foods that she missed from her home country. Many recipes were available in English at the time, but they had many mistakes or ignored important ingredients like fish sauce or radish. In 2007, Maangchi launched her YouTube channel and began sharing simple recipes. She quickly became a hit and was the most popular English-language Chef on YouTube for some time. According to Maangchi, her style and personality are the secrets to her success. In each video, she shares her <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">motherly [2] personality while wearing colorful clothes and hats and cooking traditional Korean foods. Maangchi has introduced so many people to Korean Fried Chicken, Kimchi, and Bibimbap that the New York Times called her “YouTube’s Korean Julia Child.”	Joann Lee Molinaro, also known as @thekoreanvegan, didn’t begin as a chef either. Before quitting to pursue her TikTok career full time, Molinaro was a successful attorney who attended the University of Chicago Law School and worked in several major firms. Molinaro’s videos are very personal, and often discuss the struggles she faced as an Asian-American woman living in the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Midwest [3]. In one particularly viral video, she makes Naengmyeon, buckwheat noodles in cold broth, and discusses how her family was divided by the Korean War. Molinaro’s videos have shared Korean food to millions over TikTok, and in just two years Molinaro has managed to gain nearly 3 million subscribers.	Finally, we have Johnny Kyung-Hwo. Unlike @thekoreanvegan and Maangchi, Johnny Kyung-Hwo (@johnnykyunghwo) is a young Korean professional chef and TikTok influencer. While many influencers focus on making easy-to-follow recipes, Kyung-Hwo’s videos are extremely professional and complex. The chef’s cooking projects include difficult tasks like fermenting Doenjang or creating a chocolate bar <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">from scratch [4]. Kyung-Hwo often mixes the techniques he uses as a world-renowned chef with his family’s classic Korean home cooking.  Though these three influencers all present a unique approach to social media, they have been able to share many aspects of Korean culture with their American followers. Their popularity shows that the Hallyu wave is about so much more than movies and dramas.
