By comparison, SaaS products operate on a subscription or <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">pay-per-use [1] <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">model, and their popularity has grown rapidly over the years; they are projected to continue growing rapidly in the next decade. Users of SaaS products (sometimes companies with limited resources) opt for SaaS to free up their own resources from processing demands, ease user access, and help ease the burden on their own wallets. In exchange for the conveniences of SaaS products, of course, are the fees, which are hypothetically endless.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">To explore the possible reasons for using a SaaS product, we might take a hypothetical SaaS <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">backend [2] <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">product, which we can call SendText. This backend provides SMS authentication codes to users, which they can then pass through a registration portal on a given website. In opting to use SendText, a company avoids the hassle of having to deal with setting up their own SMS capabilities, and number verification, among other tasks. In exchange, a company might opt to pay SendText some amount of money per text sent.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Of course, some of the benefits of outsourcing this work are obvious: beyond avoiding the hassles of learning or handling SMS-related communications, the developers at a company can focus their resources on other more pressing projects. SaaS products inherently rely on the internet, and as such, using them comes with embracing the dangers that come with it. Poorly designed SaaS products that leave vulnerabilities open can also lead to compromise of a client that uses said SaaS product, although these cases tend to be fewer and further between. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Finally, although the cost is oftentimes cited as a pro to SaaS products, it can also be a significant con in the long run. Because SaaS products are priced for subscription or pay-per-use, dependency can end up costing more in the long run, especially when compared to utilizing traditional, buy-it-once software. Indeed, Microsoft’s Office 365 is an example of a traditional software turned SaaS. At the end of the day, regardless of one’s feelings on SaaS, it’s undeniable that not only will it be here to stay, but it will continue to grow as major players become reliant on it.<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">
