Those of us who frequently check our smart devices without a purpose in mind or being prompted by a notification are reliant on—perhaps addicted to—technology. Imagine a major technology company, could be Google or Apple, going bust one day, and we would not be able to do much since we work, communicate, and breathe in their ecosystems.  Take KakaoTalk’s recent tech failure as an example. KakaoTalk is one of South Korea’s most popular social media apps that also provides banking and rideshare services. On October 15, 2022, a fire that broke out at Kakao’s major data center created a server failure that affected the company’s messenger, banking, email, and search engine services, to name just a few. Social login attempts linked to Kakao accounts did not work either, affecting other online businesses. Although the issue has since been resolved, it left an <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">indelible [1] mark on users’ memory about how much they rely on the company for daily functioning.  Technology—smart devices, in particular—has empowered us to do things that were once unimaginable. However, as fast as this transformation has been, we have not found an answer to the right amount of dependence. And perhaps that’s a problem. The fact is that technology is susceptible to failure; it can be hacked, and glitches and errors are bound to happen. With increased reliance on technology and automation, humans are <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">delegating [2] the decisions they used to make with their senses to machines and algorithms. And if a piece of technology goes down and cannot make decisions for us, we might feel stuck and helpless.  Technology will only continue to rise. It does not bode well to imagine a dystopian <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">doomsday [3] when robots have taken over the world, enslaving the human race, but a mindful approach can go a long way. Managing time efficiently to use technology only when needed during reasonable hours, and spreading risk by relying on multiple sources to store and share information, both analog and digital, are good starts.
