The Apple Watch is a line of smartwatches that first entered the market in 2015. Despite some early struggles in a relatively young wearables market where Fitbit has long reigned, Apple Inc.’s Apple Watch has quickly become a dominant player.  How did the Apple Watch grow from a fashion accessory to the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">dedicated [1] fitness partner that it is today? It was a combination of learning, smart changes, and careful integration into the walled garden. When it was first released in 2015, the Apple Watch “Series 0” was stunning. Besides being pairable only to the iPhone, it <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stood apart from [2] the wearables at the time as a stylish smartwatch. Indeed, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">form seemed to come before function, as the watch was rather limited in fitness tracking capabilities. Apple’s decision to release the Apple Watch Edition, a version of the Series 1 with a case made of 18-karat gold (sold for as much as seventeen grand), also pointed to its emphasis on external beauty.  However, things changed with the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">subsequent [3] releases of the Series 1 and Series 2 Watches. These models, released in 2016, introduced GPS and waterproofing, allowing for improved fitness tracking of swim and water-related sports. This put it a step ahead of Fitbit’s Charge 2, released around the same time, which would not have waterproofing or swim-tracking capabilities until its subsequent generation. These would be the first steps that Apple took towards improving fitness capabilities on their watch, but it wouldn’t be the last. In September of 2022, more than seven years after the initial debut of the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Series 8 was <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">unveiled [4]. In this span of time, various editions of the watch have gained EKG capabilities (the first wearable to be FDA approved), temperature sensors, and the ability to serve as a dive computer.  Two years prior to the Series 8 release, Apple also announced its Fitness+ program, a subscription-based package that was undoubtedly inspired in part by COVID-19 related gym closures. The subscription package integrates with the Apple Watch, tracking user workouts, and creating a virtual exercise experience.  Despite now having the lead in the wearables market share, some critics have argued that Apple’s walled garden continues to be closer to a beautiful prison. While it’s inarguable that Apple’s wearable integration with the rest of its products has helped set it apart among wearable makers, it remains to be seen how things might change in the near future, especially with the recent release of Google’s Pixel watch and Facebook’s own version which is no doubt following close on its heels.
