For many decades, Nike and Adidas <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">reigned [1] in the global sports apparel market among companies like Under Armour, Reebok, Puma, Fila, and Lululemon, who all competed only in the shadows of these two giants.  In 2014, however, Under Armour, a company that creates “sportswear for athletes,” emerged as a significant player within the US market. The company reported a US annual revenue of $2.6 billion, smashing Adidas’s annual revenue of $1.6 billion and taking the title of second place among companies with similar profiles.  Founded in 1997, Under Armour was the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">brainchild [2] of Kevin Plank, who was inspired by his reputation as the “sweatiest guy on the football team” to start the business. His experience with soggy cotton T-shirts motivated him to seek out a material that absorbed sweat from the body more effectively than cotton.  Plank’s goal in the sports apparel industry was to make functional undershirts for athletes. The name Under Armour was derived from the idea that his shirts were to be worn under the “armor” pads used in football, lacrosse, and other contact sports. When his prototype sweat-wicking fabric was ready, he sold his apparel to fellow athletes at his college and to peers who had gone on to play in the NFL. He sold 500 shirts and earned $17,000 in revenue in his first year. Plank’s sweat-wicking apparel soon became popular with athletes through word-of-mouth advertising. To grow the brand further, he secured product placements in two Warner Brothers movies: “Any Given Sunday” (1999) and “The Replacements” (2000), followed by a $25,000 ad in ESPN The Magazine. Sales inquiries soon flooded in, and the company recorded a whopping $1 million in sales directly as a result of these ad campaigns.  As brand awareness grew, Under Armour deliberately positioned itself as the brand of the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">underdogs [3]. While Nike and Adidas spent millions sponsoring world-famous athletes, Under Armour chose to work with the underdogs—athletes with little exposure but massive potential. For example, in 2012, Under Armour picked up Stephen Curry, from whom Nike had formerly shied away. Curry became the pride of the Golden State Warriors in 2014 and has since been twice named as the MVP of the NBA.  Despite a recent fall in Under Armour’s revenue likely linked to COVID-19, industry experts assert that the company has <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">what it takes [4] to compete against Nike and Adidas. Under Armour’s competitive focus is on performance athletic apparel as opposed to performance athletic apparel that also doubles as fashion wear (which is the case in some of its competitors). At the end of the day, though, it still remains to be seen whether or not Under Armour will become a meaningful threat to established sports fashion icon brands on the level of Nike and Adidas.
