Positive misconceptions of bilingualism 	While the current academic consensus regarding the effects that bilingualism has on language development is that it does not have any negative effects, the advantages of growing up bilingual in language learning are unclear. Undoubtedly, speaking two languages fluently is a great advantage when navigating different cultures, but does speaking two languages, make it easier to learn a third one? 	This question has been tested repeatedly but no definite answer could be provided yet. For simultaneous bilingualism, studies have shown very mixed results. The only studies that have consistently been able to find a significantly better ability to acquire a third language were those with sequential bilinguals—those who have learned an L2 before. However, the field of L3 acquisition is considerably less researched than that of L1 and L2 acquisition. Furthermore, it is unclear if the observed improvement in L3 acquisition is due to the ability to speak two languages or the fact that people who decide to learn a third language in their life have better learning strategies based on their experience of learning an L2. Alternatively, it is also possible that those people who go on to learn an L3 simply have a higher learning aptitude to begin with and are, thus, just generally better at learning languages (Baker: 2001). Bilingualism and identity 	Bilingualism, simultaneous or sequential, often attracts the admiration of monolingual speakers, especially when it involves prestigious languages. Particularly people who speak English at a high level on top of the local language of the country they live in are in great demand across industries and sectors. In Korea too, it is no secret that high English proficiency is considered a competitive advantage in the job market. However, this prestigious standing of English in the professional domain[3] often clashes with the reality of the private and educational domain in which people are expected to speak in Korean and adjust to the demand of monolingual Korean speakers to refrain from speaking English or code switching (Lee: 2018). 	However, languages are not only a means of communication. For bilingual as well as monolingual speakers alike, the languages they speak constitute part of their identity. A Korean-English bilingual speaker does not simply hold one identity that is translated from one language to the other. The two languages hold different parts of their whole identity which cannot be separated. Identity formation is a particularly strong during puberty. There are case studies of children who showed perfect proficiency in both Korean and English before puberty who seem to have lost much of their English by the time they graduated from high school. 	So, how does the social environment influence bilingual speakers’ choice of language and the development of their language identities (Lee: 2018)? Sociolinguistic research has not been able to give a definite answer to this question, but two factors seem to be the main indicators. First, a person’s peer group’s attitudes towards bilingualism or speaking English seem to be fairly important. The peer group has to be accepting of the individual’s bilingual identity, allowing the individual to express herself in both languages freely. Second, and considered even more important, a person’s parents’ attitude towards bilingualism have an impact on that person’s language identity formation. This does not require the parents to be bilingual themselves, but if their attitudes reflect a strong hierarchy between the two languages, this will likely be reflected in the individual’s willingness to express herself in either one. For example, if the parents discourage her from communicating extensively in English or code switch between Korean and English, it is likely that she will adopt a more monolingual Korean-speaking identity (Lee: 2018). Conclusion 	Bilingualism can be distinguished into two types: simultaneous (when learning two first languages at the same time) and sequential (when learning an L1 first and an L2 later). In regard to simultaneous bilingualism, different misconceptions depending on the context and language pair still persist. For once, there are concerns that bilingualism would interfere with children’s language development. However, those concerns have been found to be unjustified and wrong. 	On the other hand, people may have positive assumptions that growing up bilingual would give children a learning advantage over their monolingual peers. Many studies have investigated this idea but have not been able to clearly confirm it. 	As children across the globe learn second languages at an ever-younger age, the distinctions between simultaneous and sequential bilingualism become increasingly blurry. In Korea, as in many other countries, more and more children grow up learning English in addition to Korean. There is no doubt that those language skills can be advantageous later in life. But, growing up bilingual comes with its own set of challenges. Their ability to speak English fluently may often be praised. Yet, if the society they live in doesn’t provide them with sufficient opportunities to express themselves in English, it might discourage them from ever developing that language beyond the classroom.
