In May 2021, the streaming service HBO Max finally provided viewers with a highly requested piece of content: the reunion of "Friends." In the reunion documentary, the main cast of the idolized US sitcom "Friends" took a trip down memory lane and talked about the unique bond they had formed filming the series.  Those who didn't watch “Friends” when it was first airing (or didn't grow up watching it) might be slightly puzzled by the show's enduring popularity. What is it about this particular show that has people still talking about it almost 20 years after it first aired? Key to understanding this question is the notion of “nostalgia”—defined as “a sentimental longing for the past, especially periods with happy personal associations.” The creators of the show perhaps wanted to dig into this feeling. Crane, a co-creator of "Friends," explained, “The one-sentence pitch is ... it’s about that time in your life when your friends are your family.” For many people who started watching the show in 1994, this time in their young adulthood has long since passed. But they can always reminisce about this special period in their lives by watching an episode of “Friends.” Per the New York Times, “Friends” might be the most “well-liked” sitcom of all time. In the 90s and early 2000s, the cast of “Friends” became global superstars from relative obscurity [1] and dominated the airwaves, gossip magazines, and late-night talk shows. The cultural and educational appeal of the show made it a ubiquitous [2], or well-recognized, reference. In fact, people around the world have been using “Friends” as a resource to learn English since its first premiere in the 90s. Many moments from the show feel realistic and relatable to an average viewer regardless of their cultural background, and the script is written in plain English with little jargon [3]. Other sitcoms, like “Seinfeld” or “The Big Bang Theory,” might lack universal appeal in comparison since they heavily feature specific cultural references. “Friends” is a slice of life: it represents ordinary details of day-to-day life. Through relating to Rachel going on a bad date, viewers can more easily access American culture, such as holiday traditions. But what goes up must also come down. In today's climate, it seems strange that a show set in a city as multicultural as New York features a cast that represents a white, heterosexual, and middle-class demographic. The longest arc for a non-white character belonged to Aisha Tyler, who had only lasted for nine episodes before she was written out of the show that ran for ten seasons. Tyler noted that her character had originally been written as a white woman before they cast her to address criticisms of the show's lack of diversity. In light of growing efforts to represent people of all identities in the media today, audiences today might interpret “Friends” with a lens that reflects newfound expectations since the 90s. Though "Friends" is still widely loved, some critics question the shiny veneer the reunion placed on this show amid the existing controversy. They say that this event could have been a good opportunity to address some of the mistakes that were made rather than solely bask in nostalgia. It is possible that the event was trying to take advantage of the thriving “nostalgia market” during the pandemic; The cast and writers from other hit shows, such as “Community,” “The Office,” and “ER,” reunited for Zoom events that they felt would put the world at ease during such an uncertain time. Unfortunately, the “Friends” reunion trailed behind these events, which made the reunion feel inevitable and, therefore, less special.  Perhaps if they had found some way to reinvent the format or say something that these other reunions were not saying, the “Friends” reunion could have made as much of a splash as “Friends” itself did. Or perhaps, it was just missing the secret ingredient that made friends so special in the first place: authenticity. “Friends” was a show about young people trying to live their dreams, played by a group of fresh-faced actors who were far from the stardom that would lay ahead of them. Maybe, that is the way we should continue to remember it.

2021년 5월  스트리밍 서비스 HBO Max는 마침내 시청자들이 오랫동안 요청해온 프로그램을 선보였습니다. 바로 “프렌즈”의 재회(reunion)였습니다. 이 재회를 다룬 다큐멘터리에서 우상화되던 미국의 시트콤 “프렌즈”의 주인공들은 과거로 돌아가서 그때를 회상하고, 시리즈를 찍으면서 그들이 쌓았던 각별한 친분관계에 대해 얘기를 했습니다.  “프렌즈”가 처음 방송될 때 보지 않았던 사람들 (혹은 보지 않고 자란 사람들)은 이 쇼의 계속적인 인기에 의아해할 수 있습니다. 처음 방송된지 거의 20년이 되었는데 아직도 사람들 입에 오르내리는 이 쇼는 도대체 뭐가 특별한 걸까요? 이 질문을 이해하는 데 주요한 열쇠는 바로 “향수”라는 개념입니다. 향수란 “과거, 특히 개인적으로 행복이 연상되는 시대에 대한 감상적인 그리움” 으로 정의할 수 있습니다. 이 쇼의 제작자들은 아마도 이러한 감정에 깊이 파고들고자 했을겁니다. “프렌즈”의 공동제작자인 크레인이 설명하기를 “한 문장으로 요약하자면... 인생에서 당신의 친구들이 당신의 가족이었던 그 시기에 관한 것입니다.” 1994년 이 쇼를 보기 시작한 많은 사람들에게 이러한 젊은 성년기는 이미 오래전에 지나가 버렸습니다. 하지만 “프렌즈”를 보면서 그들은 항상 자신의 인생에서 특별한 그 시간을 회상하면서 추억에 젖을 수 있습니다.     뉴욕타임즈에 따르면 “프렌즈”는 시대를 통털어 “가장 많은 사랑을 받아온” 드라마일 것이라고 합니다. 90년대와 2000년대 초기에 “프렌즈”의 등장 배우들은 별로 알려지지 않은 무명에서 세계적인 슈퍼스타가 되었고 방송, 잡지, 심야 토크쇼를 장악했습니다. 쇼의 문화적 교육적 매력은 이 쇼를 어디서나 사람들이 인용하고 알아보는 소재로 만들었습니다. 사실 90년대 첫 방송 이래 전세계의 많은 사람들이 영어 공부의 자료로 “프렌즈”를 이용했습니다. 이 드라마에 나오는 많은 장면들은 평범한 시청자들에게 현실적이고도 그들의 문화적 배경과 상관없이 공감할 수 있는 것들이었습니다. 대사도 은어 없이 일상적인 영어로 이루어져 있습니다. “사인펠드”나 “빅뱅 이론”과 같은 다른 드라마들은 이에 비해 폭넓은 인기를 얻지 못했는데 그 이유는 그 쇼들은 특정한 문화적 배경을 바탕으로 그 이해를 요구하는 비유들을 많이 사용했기 때문입니다. “프렌즈”는 생활의 한 조각으로 매일의 일상적인 세부사항을 그리고 있습니다. 맘에 들지 않는 사람과 데이트를 하는 레이첼을 보고 자신의 경험과 동일시하면서 시청자들은 보다 쉽게 미국의 전통적인 명절 등과 같은 미국 문화에 접근할 수 있습니다.     그러나 세상에는 올라가는 것이 있으면 반드시 내려가는 일도 있는 법입니다. 오늘날의 문화적 환경에서는 뉴욕과 같이 다문화적인 도시를 배경으로 한 드라마에서 오로지 백인과 중산층 출신으로만 출연진을 구성한 것은 낯설게 여겨집니다. 가장 오래 등장한 비 백인 출연자는 아이샤 타일러였는데 10시즌 동안 계속된 프로에서 겨우 9개의 에피소드에만 등장하고는 사라져버렸습니다. 타일러는 원래 자신이 연기한 인물도 백인여성 이었으나 등장인물의 다양성이 결여되어 있다는 비판에 대한 대책으로 자신이 캐스팅되었다고 했습니다. 다양한 정체성을 가진 인물들을 나타내려고 애쓰는 노력이 늘어나는 오늘날의 미디어 실정을 고려할 때 오늘날의 시청자들은 90년대 이래 새로이 발견된 기대가 반영된 시각을 통해서 “프렌즈”를 해석하고자 할겁니다.  “프렌즈”는 여전히 널리 사랑을 받고 있지만 일부 비평가들은 이번의 재회가 기존의 쟁점들을 덮어둔 채 화려한 겉모습에만 치중한 것을 문제시합니다. 오로지 과거에 대한 향수에만 젖어 있을 것이 아니라 이 행사를 과거에 행해졌던 실수를 조명하는 좋은 기회로 이용할 수 있었을 거라고 지적합니다. 또한 이 행사는 팬데믹 동안 성행했던 “과거에 대한 향수” 시장을 타겟하려고 시도했던 것 같습니다. 사실 “커뮤니티,” “오피스,” “ER” 등과 같은 다른 인기있는 쇼의 배우와 작가가 줌으로 만나 이 불확실한 시기에 전 세계에 위안을 주려고 했습니다. 그러나 아쉽게도 “프렌즈”의 재회는 이러한 쇼들이 나온 뒤에 따라 나와서 이것이 어쩔 수 없이 나올 수밖에 없었고 또 그래서 별로 특별하지 않다는 느낌을 주고 말았습니다.  만약 이 쇼가 보다 새로운 형식을 시도했거나 혹은 다른 쇼들이 다루지 않은 것들을 다루었다면 이 재회 프로도 원래의 “프렌즈” 드라마처럼 큰 인기를 얻고 성공할 수 있었을겁니다. 혹은 어쩌면 이번 쇼에는 원래 프렌즈를 특별하게 만들었던 비밀 재료가 빠져 있었는지도 모릅니다. 그건 바로 진정성입니다. “프렌즈”는 자기들의 미래에 놓여 있는 스타덤과는 아직 거리가 먼, 신선한 얼굴의 신인 배우들이 자신의 꿈을 이루기 위해 노력하는 젊은이들을 연기한 드라마였습니다. 아마도 우리는 계속 “프렌즈”를 이렇게 기억하는 것이 좋을 수도 있습니다.
