What if you got to be a passenger in the rocket during the Apollo 11 mission, or listen to Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech in person? Imagine learning about the history of electricity by working with Thomas Edison to build a lightbulb, or witnessing melting glaciers in Antarctica right before your eyes. Through the implementation of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, the capabilities of education are being revolutionized. VR is a computer-generated environment that allows users to feel as though they are immersed in a real-life situation. In order to begin the VR simulation, a person typically puts on a special headset that covers their eyes and ears. Sometimes, devices are also placed on the hands and feet to give the user autonomy over their movement in the virtual environment. Technologists have long been fascinated with developing a simulated environment for humans that mimics (and sometimes enhances) the physicality of daily life. VR technology has been under development for centuries, but the latest versions have gained popularity in the past few decades; The industry has one of the highest expected growth rates among all global technology sectors. Between 2018 and 2022, the VR industry’s valuation is projected to expand over 21 times. VR technology is often merely perceived as one cool way to submerge [1] oneself in action-packed video games. However, the capabilities of this technology are far greater; in addition to the entertainment sector, VR is infiltrating other areas. For example, the health industry has started using VR technology to allow medical students to practice simulated surgeries; architects can use this technology to envision and create a realistic prototype of their structures before actually building; the U.K. military has begun integrating VR into their programs for simulated combat training. Now, the education sector is on the cusp of adding this technology to everyday classroom settings for interactive lessons that stretch our physical limitations. VR might aid humanity's desire to explore realms that are physically and intellectually difficult to reach. Utilizing the technology to bring light to [2] abstract, theoretical concepts is one way to do so. It can be challenging to visualize string theory in physics or intimately feel the effects of climate change. Instead, checking out 3D geometric forms in an immersive, tactile learning environment can spark students' imagination and interest. In 2015, The New York Times formulated a series of storytelling lesson plans rooted in virtual reality journalism. The purpose of this VR-supported series was to stimulate interest and understanding on important issues that can be hard to comprehend without firsthand experiences. For the past few years, numerous schools have started adding VR technology into their budget for school supplies. A high school in Medfield, Massachusetts, recently began using VR in their history classes to enable virtual field trips. Students can “travel” to museums that supplement different units of the curriculum—for example, virtually visiting the Holocaust Museum when learning about WWII. This anecdote points to potentially leveraging VR to teach students the value of tolerance: virtual traveling to unfamiliar cultures can enhance their sensitivity. In addition to providing a more hands-on learning experience, VR can also offer students with learning disabilities an alternative way to absorb knowledge. In 2018, the US Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs invested over two million dollars in the formulation of technology programs to enhance children’s social skills. The project is called Virtual reality Opportunities to Integrate Social Skills (VOISS), offering students with high-functioning autism a chance to practice their social and collaborative skills in a safe environment. VR technology offers a multi-sensory way to engage people, which is often lacking in a traditional classroom. Growing evidence suggests that VR in education improves student performance. A study published in March 2019 reported that students in a "mixed-reality" biology class where both AR and VR were utilized received higher test scores than others. This is not to say that VR has been fully embraced by educators—perhaps because of reasons ranging from high costs and the bulkiness of the device to pushback from school administrators. However, as aforementioned, demand for VR in education is expected to grow as aspiring teachers take new steps to help young minds navigate the world.
