Naturally, we want our peers, parents, family, school, and community to like us. And many of us, growing up, fit ourselves into the mold of propriety, striving to be approved by others. (If you’re an adult, there is little chance that you’d want to have a public meltdown to cajole your parents into buying you candy.) In a similar vein, we often try to fit ourselves into the societal expectations of our gender. Some of these expectations are merely social constructs, while others are more archetypal and influenced by our biological nature. While the line between nature versus nurture is blurred, these expectations often manifest [1] into behavioral patterns. Sherly Sandburg made an observation that “Women are … more reluctant to apply for promotions even when deserved, often believing that good job performance will naturally lead to rewards.” Her male subordinates would be pounding on her door, demonstrating that they are the best fit for the next project or promotion. On the other hand, some women would think that “if they keep doing their job well someone will notice them and place a tiara on their head.” This belief was coined the “Tiara Syndrome” by Carol Frohlinger and Deborah Kolb, founders of Negotiating Women, Inc. Of course, hard work and results shouldn’t go unnoticed. In a meritocracy, tiaras should be doled out based purely on one’s performance. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and when push comes to shove, actively advocating for oneself becomes crucial to move forward — or even survive in the workplace. But advocating for oneself requires believing in oneself. Some studies have suggested that women are more prone to imposter syndrome (a persistent sense of incompetence and self-doubt despite one’s education and achievements). In some cases, feeling like a fraud might not be because of imposter syndrome — it might come from genuine incompetence [2] or a hostile work environment where others give unwarranted criticism. However, other things being equal, women’s tendency to be overly harsh on themselves can make it more difficult for them to stick up for themselves. That said, the takeaway ought to be: work hard and be well prepared, but then believe in yourself and ask for more.
