A successful career might not be the end-all-be-all. Being in love, at least in some of us, might stir up the desire to have children with our partner. Coupled with this natural desire, we are advised that a career alone won’t make us feel as comprehensively fulfilled as we might expect it would. Simply put, family and friends are also as important. Career and education are part of what makes us generally useful in society, where we find meaning and purpose. But there are other important, canonical pillars such as family, friendship, relationship, and children. Jordan Peterson is a pundit [1] that somberly reiterates a version of, “You miss one of them, and you’re gonna pay for it.”  For some, this statement might sound grim and extreme; a life’s worth or the potential for happiness in its course cannot be simply judged by whether you have friends or are in a romantic relationship. You might not have one or two of those “canonical” pillars and still do fine. No children perhaps means more freedom to channel your resources to bettering wider society or beautifying your garden. Yet, there is a kernel of truth in Peterson’s warning. Aside from the acknowledgement that not everyone can afford to have a fulfilling career with arcs, work and education don’t have to be the primary purpose in everyone’s life. After all, a big chunk of the population is paid to do work they wouldn't otherwise do.  	 And so, that was how I came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t make a Big Law partner. Okay, that was abrupt. Let’s rewind a bit. As a woman, I’d thought that I would have to choose between making it to the top of my profession or having a family with children, but not both. And if having a family was that important and making it to a partner in New York City wouldn’t be enough to compensate for the “sacrifices” I’d have to make — such as not having children only to be deprived of sleep and clock in 100 hours a week — I thought, ‘not an appealing option!’  Around the time I’d come to terms with a tempered outlook on my career, an in-house attorney, I read Sheryl Sandburg’s “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.” It was a turning point — or, put it more subtly, an inflection point [2] where a graph’s concavity [3] changes. Her most powerful message is that you can do both: make it to the top and have a happy family. Her book, where readers can see the honest, insecure, and humorous sides of Ms. Sandberg, boils down to believing in yourself and giving it your all.  The book is full of gems and anecdotes of the famous and the rich. But before we dig deeper into some of these helpful snippets, there is some criticism about the book that I’d like to address, in hopes that this will reveal some nuances. One line of criticism that I often see is that “Lean In” is a naive book that puts the burden on the woman and tells her things that her employers would tell her. The criticism continues: “leaning in” translates to working harder and more to have it all. Avivah Wittenberg-Cox, a consultant working with companies to improve their gender balances, writes, “[Ms. Sandberg] does what too many successful women before her have done: blaming other women for not trying hard enough.”  I’d say that this line of criticism comes from a misguided understanding of Sheryl’s advice. Her message to women is not: work harder, and you’ll have it both ways (career and family). Instead, it is that you can have it both ways, but you cannot do everything and be everything. There is an entire chapter dedicated to “The Myth of Doing It All.”  Rather than blaming women for not working hard enough, Ms. Sandberg points out that she has to get a “real partner” that is willing to take on at least half or the majority of housework and childrearing burden. She also acknowledges structural and legislative limitations that make it more difficult for women to incorporate their maternity into a corporate timeline: dearth of offered paternity leaves, the illegality of discussing parenthood planning during job interviews, “social conventions, peer pressure, and familial expectations.”  That said, some seem to only read “Lean In” that is writ large, but implied in the title seems to be: Lean in when necessary and lean out where you could. In her book, she quotes Dr. Laurie Glimcher, dean of Weill Cornell Medical College, who said, “I had to decide what mattered and what didn’t and I learned to be a perfectionist in only things that mattered.”  Sheryl writes, “For many men, the fundamental assumption is that they can have both a successful professional life and a fulfilling personal life.” Contemplating this assumption, “Lean In” is an attempt to allow men and women to share the same belief that they can have it both ways. And writing to women, she comments on how and when they could lean in (and out). In chapter two, “Sit at the Table,” she tells readers to be more confident in their ability and not shy away from opportunities.  For women experiencing imposter syndrome, that even the wildly successful writer and actress Tina Fey has admitted to feeling incompetent would be comforting. Fey once explained, “The beauty of the impostor syndrome is you vacillate between extreme egomania, and a complete feeling of: ‘I’m a fraud! Oh god, they’re on to me! I’m a fraud!’” Building upon this point, Sheryl tells readers to sharpen their edge and don’t “leave before you leave” — to give it your all. Of course, the book doesn’t fully analyze societal and legal issues that may or may not hamper women’s careers and gender balance. But it offers mindset changes an individual could make. For those who have even a smidgen [4] of career ambition in them, wondering how they could balance their social and private life, “Lean In” would be a good read.
