Colonizing Mars

A popular idea has been floating around that humans will soon colonize Mars, the Red Planet. Elon Musk projects Mars colonies in the 2050s, while Lewis Darnell, an astrobiologist at the University of Westminster, has said that it’ll be 50 to 100 years before “substantial numbers of people have moved to Mars to live in self-sustaining towns.” Despite the ambition, monumental challenges await us. Mars is a desert planet, and although the Martian environment is the closest thing we have to Earth’s in the solar system, that doesn’t say much about hope. For starters, the atmosphere on the Red Planet is 100 times thinner than what we have on Earth. The scant amount of air that does exist is mostly carbon dioxide, which provides little protection against the harmful rays of the Sun. The thin air captures less heat as well, which accounts for the icy temperatures on Mars, ranging from -63°C (-81°F) to -126°C (-195°F).  Low air pressure and gravity also present an almost intractable [1] problem. Air pressure on Mars is only about 0.6 percent of that of Earth, which can cause severe symptoms including ruptured lungs and dangerously swollen skin. Exposure to the low gravity of Mars, which is 0.375 times that of Earth, can cause loss of bone and muscle as well.  Resources on Earth are limited while the human population is increasing. This gives us reason to think that future generations might have to turn to other planets. With a spoonful of imagination, colonizing the Red Planet seems to present an exciting solution.  However, cosmologist and astrophysicist Martin Rees succinctly puts the issue of Mars colonization in realistic terms in his book, “On the Future.” He says he disagrees with Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking, “who enthuse about rapid build-up of large-scale Martian communities.” To Rees, colonizing Mars as a quick fix to Earth’s problems is a “dangerous delusion.” He continues: “coping with climate change may seem daunting, but it’s a doddle [2] compared to terraforming Mars. No place in our solar system offers an environment even as clement as the Antarctic or the top of Everest.” Thus, it might be a stretch to think that we can conveniently escape from Earth’s problems into space. If anything, running away to Mars might prove more challenging than facing issues square and fair on the Blue Planet. This is not to say that building self-sustaining communities on Mars or other planets is ever impossible. Rather, the prospects of Mars colonization should be tempered with realistic concerns -- and in the meantime, let’s work on our home planet, Earth.
