We expect the Sun to rise every morning. We know it’s always there during certain hours of the day, even when clouds hang thick in the sky. The bright red star is not an uncertainty but rather an immutable background element in our lives. So its prominence notwithstanding, we don’t often discuss the Sun -- we just know it’s there.  It goes without saying that the Sun is essential. The energy from this bright thermonuclear ball sustains life on Earth. Less appreciated but equally important is the Sun’s interaction with outer space. The energetic particles emitted by the Sun create a protective bubble that encapsulates [1] the solar system. Also called the heliosphere, this bubble is a result of the Sun’s interaction with galactic gas, plasma, and dust.  The heliosphere has caught the attention of scientists as a habitable astrosphere. The astrosphere is the heliosphere of other stars: it is the area filled with hot gas blown into space by stellar winds. The heliosphere is unique in that it has allowed life to prosper. So scientists think unlocking what’s happening in the heliosphere will give us a clearer picture of the origins of life and space. One way to study the heliosphere is to launch a spacecraft. This spacecraft will have to collect information within the heliosphere but also explore the galactic environment beyond the reach of the solar wind. Such a mission will allow scientists to guess the shape of the heliosphere.  A heliospheric mission would be timely since the solar system will be entering a galactic region with different properties in relatively short galactic time scales [2] (within 6000 years). The Sun is plowing through a star-strewn galaxy at a speed of 200 km/hour -- with Earth and other planets tagging along. When the Sun travels beyond the local interstellar cloud currently surrounding the solar system, the heliospheric properties might go through drastic changes, affecting life on Earth.  Thus, NASA is planning Interstellar Probe, a heliospheric mission. The goal of this mission is to explore our heliosphere as a habitable astrosphere and study “the origin and evolution of planetary systems.” If the mission gets the green light, a spacecraft will be sent to fly farther than any mission has ever reached. The Interstellar Probe will likely last 100 years or more, being carried out by generations of scientists.  A mission to explore what the Sun does in space might not be the most impressive project; a heliospheric mission sounds perhaps too technical and boring. From science fiction, we are more familiar with warp drives and the idea of colonizing stars. However, behind every revolution is the tedium of small progress. Interstellar Probe, as a heliospheric mission, could be a stepping stone to better understanding space.
