What it Means to Be Well-Spoken

그런 나이가 된거잖아요

As someone who speaks English as a second language, I’ve recently started asking myself what it means to speak good English. Using big words may impress people, but does that really make one well-spoken? I recall watching an interview with former first lady Laura Bush a while ago. A particular phrase she used during the interview stayed with me. Explaining that she reads e-books by making the font bigger, she added, “now that I am at a certain age,” alluding to her age-related presbyopia [1]. In that small statement, she brought up the issue of her eyesight deteriorating without being direct or using convoluted words– what an elegant way to express oneself!  Think about how often you have to turn to large words when you speak in your mother tongue. In your daily life, or even when you speak in front of an audience at work or in school, you don't jam-pack the conversation with advanced vocabulary. In fact, if your speech is convoluted, someone might call you out and ask you to “speak plainly, so that I can wrap my head around what you’re getting at!” Rather than relying too much on fancy vocabulary, it is sometimes better to choose simple words to clearly get your point across. Now, consider how much time and effort it takes for a person to reach native proficiency in their first language. I have used Korean my entire life by way of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, all the while learning from my mistakes. In fact, we become native speakers by making and correcting countless mistakes. With all those years of effort, it is still difficult to be a well-spoken individual. Then, can you imagine what it would take to be well-spoken in a second language? It’s often difficult to find the exact word you’re looking for when speaking in your mother tongue. Imagine how much harder it is in a second language.  So, this is to all my English learners: just because it’s difficult, it doesn’t mean you should give up. It can feel like a long, arduous journey. And while we were expected to make mistakes as children learning our first language, making mistakes as a grown-up can hurt. Instead of beating yourself up for not speaking perfectly, whatever that means, why not just enjoy the learning process? Accurate grammar and having a large vocabulary are not the be-all-end-all [2]. Instead, focus on how you can leverage grammar and vocabulary to express yourself more efficiently.

두번째 언어로 영어를 쓰는 저는, 최근에 “영어를 잘 한다는 것은 뭘까?”에 대해 생각해 본 적이 있습니다. 아주 고급 어휘들로 이루어진 문장을 구사하는 사람에게 감탄을 보낼 수는 있겠지만, 그걸로 이 사람이 정말 영어를 잘한다고 이야기 할 수 있을까요?  얼마 전 접했던 미국 영부인 로라 부시 여사의 인터뷰가 생각납니다. 그 분이 사용한 한 구절이 특히 제 마음에 남았거든요. 부시 여사는 전자책을 읽을 때 폰트를 크게 키워 읽는다고 설명하면서, “이제 그런 나이가 된 거잖아요(“Now that I am at a certain age”)라고 덧붙였습니다. 나이가 들어 노안이 왔다는 것을 넌즈시 표현한 것이죠. 이 짧은 한마디로 부시 여사는 난해한 단어를 사용하지 않으면서도 시력이 약해지고 있다는 문제를 언급했습니다. 본인의 상태를 나타내는 무척 우아한 표현입니다! 모국어를 구사할 때 얼마나 수준 높은 어휘를 사용하는지 한번 생각해 보세요. 일상생활이나 더 나아가서 회사나 학교에서 뭔가를 발표 하고 보고 하는 중에도 소위 말하는 고급 어휘를 마구 사용하지는 않으실 겁니다. 오히려 너무 어려운 단어를 넣어서 말을 하다보면, “쉬운 말로 얘기해봐. 뭘 말하는지 알아들을 수 있게” 라는 주문을 받는 경우도 있었을 것입니다. 사실 멋진 단어들을 남용하는 것보다 쉬운 단어로 내용을 잘 전달하는 것이 훨씬 내용을 전달하는 데 효과적입니다.  이제, 여러분이 완벽한 모국어를 구사하게 되기까지 얼마나 많은 시간과 노력과 연습이 필요했는지 생각해보세요. 저는 어렸을 때부터 한국어를 듣고, 말했고, 글을 읽고 또 써왔고, 그 과정에서 끊임 없이 실수들을 교정받았습니다. 그리고 나서도 “정말 말을 잘한다”는 평가를 받기는 쉽지 않습니다. 하물며 두번째 언어로 밟는 이 과정이 얼마나 쉬울 수 있겠습니까? 모국어도 매일 쓰지 않으면 단어가 생각나지 않을 때가 있는데, 하물며 두번째 언어로는 이게 얼마나 어려울까요?  그러니 제가 영어를 공부하는 모든 분들께 드리고 싶은 말씀은, 이 과정이 쉽지 않다고 해서 영어 공부를 포기하지는 말자는 것입니다. 그 과정은 길고 고되게 느껴진다 해도 말입니다. 몰론 어려서 모국어를 배우며 실수를 하는 것은 당연했지만, 어른이 되어 실수를 한다는 것은 더 뼈아프게 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 하지만 완벽하게 말하지 못한다고 스스로를 타박하기 전에 - 그 완벽이 뭐든 말입니다 - 그냥 그 과정을 즐겨보는 것은 어떠신가요? 정확한 문법과 어휘가 가장 중요한 것은 아닙니다. 대신 문법이나 단어를 익히는 것을 좀 더 효율적이고 정확한 표현을 위한 기틀로 삼아보면 어떨까요?
