Jane Austen wrote very likable heroines. 

Belle, the heroine in the movie Beauty and the Beast doesn’t fall for all the fake social markers of Gatson–she is incredibly wise.

Personal agency produces responsibility, and thus, rights.

Your Cinderella Story

You know the Cinderella story. We all do.  She is a princess. She falls in love with Prince Charming in a blue dress and glittery headband. She escapes her wicked stepmother and stepsisters through marriage and lives happily ever after.  We most likely know the Cinderella story from Disney’s 1950 animated adaptation of “Cendrillon.” “Cendrillon” is a 17th-century French tale with striking similarities to the movie adaptation, from the glass slippers to the pumpkin carriage, and the fairy godmother. The Cinderella story we know, then, is about 400 years old.  Let’s change it up a bitA story of a heroine [1] successfully marrying off to a prince has its charm. That’s why the story survived for centuries. But there is plenty of room to rethink the plot … and your version of Cinderella might come out better! Here are some points we can start from: Cinderella’s reaction to tyrannyHow does Cinderella react to oppression? Her stepmother gives her all the hard work. She is forced to sleep in the attic and wear rags; the dirt and cinders on her are what give her the name cinder-ella. Rather than rebelling against the unfair treatments, Cinderella diligently does her work with a hopeful and upbeat attitude. She accepts the situation and tries to keep positive. Cinderella’s reaction to tyranny is one way of dealing with difficult situations. You cannot control some things in your life. And it is better to focus on the things that you can change, rather than to resent the things that you cannot. Cinderella is excellent at this: she sings with animal friends and remains kind. However, one cannot help but wonder how the story would end were Cinderella a bit more active. If I were Cinderella, I might write a letter to my father or try to (physically) fight my stepmother. But this was perhaps impossible 400 years ago when the original story was written. Back in the day, women didn’t have much control over their lives, though we now think that women and men should equally have agency [2] over their lives and individuality.  Love at first sightCinderella and Prince Charming meet each other at a ball and instantly fall in love. Following his heart, Charming proposes to her on their second interaction! Romantic, isn’t it?Well, this marriage might not be the best idea. Mind you– they barely know each other and their only interaction before marriage happens at a ball. At a ball! This is where people show up all dressed up to put their best foot forward. How wise is it, after all, to decide that you will live the next 70 years with a person after one spectacular evening? Not every day of life is ball night. Fairy godmotherCinderella has a fairy godmother who turns a pumpkin into a carriage and her shabby outfit into a dress. This fairy is a savior who turns up at the very last minute to empower the heroine. Though not as dramatic, if you look around, there might be people in your life that had your back through hardship. Think about those people and how they’ve supported you. Based on this, in an alternate universe, how could the fairy godmother help Cinderella without using the power of magic? Also, why do you think the fairy in the story appears as a maternal figure? A fairy godfather would be equivalently powerful.  Your Cinderella storyIt’s time to think about what you would change from the original fairy tale. There is no one correct way to go about this. On a different note, if life gets difficult, cast a spell, “Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!”

여러분은 신데렐라 이야기를 알고 있습니다. 우리 모두 다 알고 있는 이야기입니다.  그녀는 공주입니다. 파란색 드레스를 입고 반짝거리는 머리띠를 하고 멋진 왕자와 사랑에 빠집니다. 그녀는 결혼을 함으로써 사악한 새어머니와 새언니에게서 벗어나 왕자와 행복하게 살게 됩니다. 우리는 아마 신데렐라를 1950년에 디즈니가 "상드리용"을 만화로 만든 이야기로부터 알게 되었을 것입니다. “상드리용”은 유리구두에서부터 호박 마차, 마법할머니에 이르기까지 디즈니 만화와 놀라운 유사성을 지닌 17세기 프랑스 이야기입니다. 그러니 우리가 알고 있는 신데렐라 이야기는 약 400년 전의 이야기라는 말입니다. 조금만 달리 생각해봅시다.여주인공이 왕자와 성공적으로 결혼하는 이야기에는 나름의 매력이 있습니다. 이 이야기가 수세기 동안 살아남은 이유는 그것입니다. 하지만 줄거리를 다시 생각해볼 여지는 충분히 있고... 사실  여러분이 더 훌륭한 신데렐라 이야기를 지어낼 수도 있습니다! 아래와 같은 점에서부터 시작해보세요. 학대에 대한 신데렐라의 반응신데렐라는 억압에 어떻게 반응하나요? 신데렐라의 새어머니는 그녀에게 힘든 일을 시킵니다. 그녀는 다락방에서 자고 누더기를 입어야 했습니다. 늘 흙과 재가 묻어 있기 때문에 그녀(엘라)는 “재투성이 엘라”(신데렐라)라고 불리게 됩니다. 이런 부당한 대우에 저항하기는 대신, 신데렐라는 희망적이고 긍정적인 자세로 열심히 일합니다. 그녀는 그 상황을 받아들이고 긍정적으로 생각하려고 노력합니다.학대에 대한 이런 신데렐라의 반응은 어려운 상황에 대처하는 방법 중 하나입니다. 우리의 삶에는 우리가 통제할 수 없는 것들이 있습니다. 그리고 바꿀 수 없는 것에 화를 내기 보다는 바꿀 수 있는 것에 집중하는 것이 더 좋습니다. 신데렐라는 이런 면에서 아주 뛰어납니다. 그녀는 동물 친구들과 노래를 부르고 친절함을 잃지 않습니다.하지만 신데렐라가 조금 더 적극적이었다면 이야기가 어떻게 끝났을지 궁금하지 않을 수 없습니다. 만약 제가 신데렐라였다면 저는 아버지에게 편지를 쓰거나 계모와 (신체적으로 부딪쳐) 싸우려고 시도했을 것입니다. 그런 행동은 400년 전 원작이 쓰여질 당시에는 불가능했을 수도 있습니다. 아마 과거에는 여성이 자신의 삶을 통제할 수 없었을 것입니다. 하지만 지금은 남녀 모두가 동등하게 자신의 삶과 존재를 주관할 수 있다고 생각합니다.  첫눈에 반한 사랑신데렐라와 멋진 왕자는 무도회장에서 만나 순식간에 사랑에 빠집니다. 왕자는 자기의 마음이 가는데로, 딱 두번째 만났을 때 신데렐라에게 청혼을 합니다! 정말 로맨틱하지 않은가요? 글쎄요, 이 경우 결혼이 그리 좋은 생각이 아닐 수 있습니다. 생각해보세요. 그들은 서로 거의 알지 못하며 결혼 전의 유일한 상호작용은 무도회에서 일어납니다. 무도회에서! 그곳은 사람들이 남에게 잘 보이기 위해 근사하게 차려입고 모이는 곳입니다. 결국 누군가와 한번 멋진 저녁을 보낸 후에 그 사람과 앞으로 70년을 살겠다고 결정하는 것이 얼마나 현명한 일일까요? 인생의 모든 날이 무도회 밤이 아닙니다. 마법의 요정 대모님신데렐라에게는 호박을 마차로, 허름한 옷을 드레스로 바꿀 수 있는 마법의 힘을 가진 대모가 있습니다. 이 요정은 여주인공에게 힘을 실어주기 위해 마지막 순간에 나타나는 구세주입니다. 이만큼 극적이지는 않더라도 주위를 둘러보면 여러분이 힘들 때 여러분을 지원해준 사람들이 있을 수 있습니다. 그 사람들과 그들이 당신을 어떻게 도와주었는지 생각해보세요.이를 바탕으로, 이와 다른 세계에서였더라면, 요정 대모님이 마법을 쓰지 않고 어떻게 신데렐라를 도울 수 있었을까요? 그리고 동화 속 요정이 왜 어머니 같은 인물로 나왔다고 생각하나요? 요정 대부님이 나왔어도 똑같이 놀라운 역할을 했을겁니다. 여러분의 신데렐라 이야기이제 원작을 어떻게 바꿔볼지 고민해볼 시간입니다. 여기에는 맞고 틀린 답이 없습니다. 그리고 이와는 별개로, 여러분의 삶이 힘들어질 때면 이렇게 주문을 한번 외워보세요!
