The global video gaming market has more than doubled over the past 10 years and is estimated to have reached $138 billion in 2021. Compare that to the global OTT service market which is estimated at $77 billion. Regardless of whether you like video games or not, they have carved their way into the global mainstream culture and are likely here to stay, just like television, the radio, and books. The reasons why people enjoy video games are manifold [1], but good themes and stories have become a hallmark for every year’s AAA releases [2]. Games have evolved from a simple test of a player’s skill to a fully-fledged means of storytelling with intricate world-building and social discourse that sometimes rival Hollywood movies and bestselling novels. As an art, games have the potential to offer their audience a unique experience no other medium can: The ability to actively interact with the fictional world and shape the way the story unfolds. Instead of following the protagonists, games let you be the protagonist. Multiplayer games can add another dimension of collaboration and team play to the mix. Be that as a Tolkienian group of heroes standing up to the forces of evil in World of Warcraft or in a sports-like competitive match against other teams in League of Legends, there is no doubt that games have the potential to foster communities and social interactions. Nevertheless, many people are skeptical about the cultural value of video games and concerned about the potential risks they may pose to particularly young audiences. For decades, researchers have looked into how video games affect children’s and adolescents’ behavior. One specific parental and societal concern reinserts itself into social discourse again and again following court hearings, television media reports, and word-of-mouth: that is, whether the playing of violent video games is linked to violent or aggressive behavior. By and large, recent analyses have not been able to find a correlation that was strong enough to be considered even a “small effect.” Yet, many parents have concerns about the effects of video games on their children. So, are video games good or bad for kids? The answer to that question is unfortunately not so clear-cut [3]. While playing video games doesn’t automatically lead to violent behavior, this is not to say that games don’t affect young people at all. Research from New Zealand has found that children and teens who regularly play violent video games show weaker emotional reactions when they are shown violent images compared to a control group.  While games have fully become part of the international canon of storytelling media, there continue to be important effects to research and explore. Common misconceptions connecting violent video gameplay to violent behavior have been debunked, but this doesn’t mean that there aren’t consequences to excessive gameplay. Every child will eventually come in contact with violent video games at some point in their lives-- to withhold them from kids altogether is unrealistic. Instead, parents are best observing their children’s emotional and behavioral response to the games they play and helping them interpret violent content better by talking about gameplay or perhaps even engaging in some gameplay together.
