The clock hits 10 AM, and the interviewer joins the Zoom meeting. As I answer her questions one by one, my brain grinds to a halt, and I start debating in my head: "Why do people say ‘toothbrush’? Isn’t ‘teethbrush’ more logical because you brush multiple teeth? Can I just start calling it a ‘teethbrush’? I like it better that way." I can’t tell if the interviewer likes me or not, and we talk about our favorite books and Ravel, a 20th-century French composer, after discussing more serious topics like “why law.” I give her a socially awkward goodbye and leave the meeting. My palms are sweaty, and facial muscles twitch.  This is my most recent law school interview experience in a nutshell. I remember talking to my friend afterward, fretting that I wouldn’t get in, disclosing the stupid toothbrush/teethbrush debate that overwhelmed me during the conversation. Moreover, right after the interview, so many “should have” or “could have” scenarios came to my mind, and I gave myself a hard time for not having done better. To my surprise, I soon got a letter of admission in my inbox. I then wondered why the interviewer hadn’t been put off by my nervousness and general awkwardness. I found helpful resources including blog posts written by former admissions officers, and everything started to make more sense–social awkwardness, when it comes off as being self-aware, can even be a plus.  Different schools interview for different reasons, but one common criterion is employability. Interviewers want to see if an applicant will be able to handle job interviews in the future; the qualities they are looking for are thoughtfulness and a sense of confidence without grandiosity. A former admissions officer at Washington University in St. Louis Law once recounted that he had an applicant say, “I just got off the phone with a billionaire” in an interview–overt insecurity won’t necessarily be flagged as an issue whereas covert insecurity manifesting itself as <span style="11pt; Times New Roman; color: rgb(32, 33, 36); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">braggadocio [2] can lead to rejection. Sometimes people over-prepare an interview by writing a script, which, in the words of an admissions consultant, is “setting yourself up for failure.” In an interview, you want to be personable and make the interviewer enjoy the conversation rather than reading off a script, making yourself sound robotic, distant, and cold. When they sense that the responses are scripted, experienced interviewers throw curveballs to garner genuine reactions. Instead of planning out every single detail in advance, prepare your answers in general, philosophical terms.  In addressing the “why school x” question in an interview context, unlike in your essay, enumerating facts about that school that are publicly advertised can benefit you. If you are given the opportunity to ask a question, set the stage for the interviewer to brag about their school. Make the interviewer talk about themself, and they’ll leave the interview feeling good.  In hindsight, although I felt bad after the interview, it’s possible that the interviewer left the meeting feeling great.

마른 입술에 침을 바르며 저는 가슴이 마구 두근거리는 것을 느꼈습니다. 시계가 10시를 가리키자 면접관이 줌 미팅에 들어왔습니다. 면접관의 질문에 하나하나 답해가면서 저는 뇌가 서서히 멈추는 것 같았습니다. 머리속에서는 엉뚱한 생각이 맴돌고 있었습니다. “왜 ‘칫솔’이라는 단어에서 ‘치아’ 부분이 복수가 아니고 단수일까? 사람의 이는 여러 개니까 복수를 써야 맞잖아? 이제부터 나라도 그냥 복수를 사용해볼까? 난 그게 더 좋은데.” 면접관이 저를 마음에 들어하는지 아닌지 알 수 없었지만 “왜 법조인이 되고 싶은지”와 같은 심각한 주제에 대한 이야기를 마친 후에는, 제가 좋아하는 책과 20세기 프랑스 작곡가 라벨에 대해서 얘기했습니다. 저는 어색하게 인사를 하고는 그 화상미팅방을 나왔습니다. 손바닥은 땀에 젖어 있었고 얼굴 근육은 떨렸습니다.  이것이 바로 제가 가장 최근에 본 로스쿨 면접의 간단한 경험담입니다. 면접이 끝나고 저는 친구에게 면접 내내 내 머릿속을 차지하고 있던 어리석은 칫솔 생각을 털어놓으며 이 학교에는 합격하지 못할거라고 조바심을 내던 것을 기억합니다. 게다가 면접 직후에는 “이렇게 했어야 했는데” 혹은 “이렇게 할 수도 있었는데”라는 아쉬운 부분들을 끊임없이 떠올리며 자책하는 시간을 보냈습니다. 그러나 놀랍게도 저는 얼마 되지 않아 합격 통지 이메일을 받았습니다.  그때 저는 왜 면접관이 저의 긴장하고 어색한 태도에도 저를 싫어하지 않았는지 생각해보았습니다. 저는 전 입학사정관들이 쓴 블로그 등 도움이 되는 자료들을 찾아보면서 많은 것을 이해할 수 있게 되었습니다. 예를 들면 어색해보이는 모습이 자기 상태를 제대로 인식하는 것으로 여겨지면 오히려 장점이 될 수도 있다는 것 등입니다.  학교마다 각기 다른 이유로 면접을 진행하지만 하나의 공통된 기준이 있다면 그것은 바로 이 사람이 졸업 후 직장을 잘 잡을 만한 사람인지(조직에서 원할 만한 사람인지) 여부를 보는 것입니다. 면접관은 훗날 이 지원자가 취업 면접을 잘 해낼 수 있을지를 보고 싶어하므로 면접관이 찾는 것은 사려깊음과 과하지 않은 자신감입니다. 세인트루이스에 있는 워싱턴대 로스쿨의 전 입학사정관은 면접에서 “제가 방금 억만장자와 통화를 했습니다”라고 말한 지원자의 사례를 들었는데, 내면의 불안감이 허풍으로 드러나면 불합격이라는 결과를 가져올 수 있는 반면, 겉으로 드러나는 명백한 불안감은 반드시 문제가 되지는 않는다고 말한 적이 있습니다.  간혹 어떤이들은 대답할 말을 미리 써놓는 등 면접 준비를 너무 지나치게 하기도 하는데, 입시 상담가의 말에 의하면 이는 “실패로 가는 지름길”이라고 합니다. 인터뷰에서 각본대로 답을 해서 기계적이고 동떨어지고 차갑게 느껴지기보다는 대하기 편안한 사람으로 보이고 면접관이 대화를 즐기도록 해야 합니다. 경험이 많은 면접관들은 각본에 따라 답을 하는 것을 알아차리면 진정한 반응을 이끌어내기 위해 예상치 못한 어려운 질문을 던질 것입니다. 미리 모든 상황 하나하나에 대한 자세한 대답을 만들어놓는 대신 일반적이고 철학적인 용어들을 사용한 대답을 준비하세요. 면접에서 “왜 이 학교에 가고 싶은지”에 대해 대답할 때는, 에세이 쓸 때와는 달리 그 학교가 홍보하는 점들을 나열하는 것이 유리할 수도 있습니다. 당신에게 질문을 할 기회가 주어지면 면접관이 학교에 대해 자랑할 수 있도록 분위기를 잡아주세요. 면접관에게 자기에 대한 이야기를 할 기회를 주면 면접관도 기분 좋게 면접을 끝낼 것입니다.  돌이켜보니 인터뷰가 끝난 직후 제 기분은 좋지 않았지만 면접관은 기분좋게 끝냈었을 수도 있다는 생각이 듭니다.
