Why Language Learners Make Mistakes

New language learners make mistakes, despite being able to recite the rules of grammar. By comparison, native speakers may not be able to recite linguistic rules and yet are fairly consistent in their application. Why do these mistakes happen? What are the most common ones? And most importantly, how might they be avoided? Why do we misunderstand?The mechanisms that produce mistakes in language, by and large, are related to the way our brains process language. Using language is a cognitive [1] process that requires our attention. This is true for both native speakers and learners. However, the more automated a process becomes, the less attention it requires. Think about a new driver that has to actively remember to shift gears, check the rear-view and side mirrors, use the turn signal, and observe street signs—an experienced driver can handle all of that while having a lively conversation with a passenger. In this analogy, native speakers are experienced drivers, and learners are the newbies; language learners have to muster a lot more attention than native speakers to produce language.  Now, attention is a limited resource, and we might not always have enough brainpower to handle a conversation or write a coherent sentence, which are highly complex tasks. When there is a shortage of attention, the brain falls back on the next best (albeit wrong) automated solution to focus on the most important task: making meaning. The result is often a cognitive fallacy [2], a mistake. Common MistakesSuch cognitive fallacies are called heuristics, from the Greek expression “Heureka!,” roughly meaning “I have a sudden idea!.” Several of those linguistic heuristics that are common in language learners have been identified, some of which include:<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">The primacy of content words: Learners tend to focus more on content words rather than modifying words that express negative meaning, questions, passive and active voice, etc. A learner describing their childhood may say, "I raised in a small town" instead of "I was raised in a small town." "To raise" is the content word of the sentence, but the learner forgets to use it in the passive voice.</li></ul> <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Meaning before non-meaning: Some words only have grammatical functions but don’t convey any specific meaning on their own. Learners often don’t notice those when listening, or they omit them when producing language. A learner talking about their driving experience may say, "I am really difficult to drive," instead of "It is difficult for me to drive." The pronoun "it" in the correct sentence doesn't have any meaning; it simply serves the grammatical role of the subject. Because it has no meaning, the learner substitutes it for a meaningful pronoun, "I."</li></ul> <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">The first-noun principle: In languages like English, when reading or hearing sentences in the passive voice or in an alternative word order, learners tend to understand the first noun as the active subject. When listening to a sentence like "The boy was abandoned by his parents," a learner may ask, "Why did he leave?" instead of "Why did they leave?." The learner processes this passive sentence as an active sentence.</li></ul> <ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:disc;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">L1 transfer: Every learner of a second language has already mastered their native language. When falling back to automated speaking patterns, learners tend to fall back to their mother tongue and translate it. For example, a learner currently on vacation may say, "I'm going back to work after 5 days" instead of "I'm going back to work in 5 days" because their language doesn't distinguish between "in 5 days" and "after 5 days."</li></ul> How to avoid mistakesHeuristics occur when the brain is busy trying to decipher [3] an overwhelming amount of incoming information. Since there is no way to increase our total attention, the only way to avoid mistakes is to either decrease the amount of information the brain has to process or automate the mechanisms with which you process information to use up less attention. One way to decrease the amount of information is to separate meaning and form tasks. For example, when you’re reading a text, try to ignore the grammar and vocabulary you don’t know (perhaps highlight those parts for review) and instead focus on understanding as much as you can. Then, by yourself or with a tutor, look up the unclear parts and check your understanding of the text. When you’re having a conversation, try to express your ideas as well as you can without paying particular attention to your grammar or vocabulary accuracy. After the conversation is over, take some time to review what you’ve said and see if you can correct any of it by yourself or with the help of your tutor. Automating your language, on the other hand, is a more tedious and long-term process. It requires continuous and consistent exposure and active review. The more you use the language and correct yourself, the more accurate you will become without having to pay lots of attention.
